Been playing music since dirt was invented . . .When I was growing up, my dad was married 4 times. I went to 14 different schools from Kindergarten to the 12th grade. I was kidnapped twice by different parents, and I generally had a hatred towards our value system and any one in authority. Therefore my lifestyle resembled a lot of other rebellious youth.
My first stepmother Chrissy, was just 6 years older than I was, and as I became a teenager, I was out of control. I went to Juvi @ 13 for stealing a motorcycle, and got into lying, stealing and doing drugs almost daily. At 16, the writing was on the wall, and my parents kicked me out of the house as I turned 17 and I've been on my own ever since. Now that was some wisdom. I can't tell you the number of times that I should have been dead or in prison for the crazy and illegal things that I did. I would run drugs from Mexico to Marin county and as far east as Arkansas, I actually specialized in LSD for 2 years. I was a very good surfer and skateboarder, but because of drugs and alcohol, I missed the opportunities to really excel in those sports. I really thought I had it made, no one could tell me different, I never wanted to get married, the sound of having kids was repulsive and working for a living was a joke. I could get into lots of details that would blow your mind, but I won't. What matters most, is that my life was suddenly turned around.
I believe all people have a need that all people share.
I had been turning lots of people towards drugs and a lifestyle of rebellion. I preached burning "The man". And one day, I noticed that this friend of mine Chris Mudgett, had not been around for a couple of months. This was very unusual, because I had got him stoked with good weed and coke and since I was a major supplier to the Naval Training Center in SD, I would normally see him every week for his supplies. Then one day in March of 1975, the year I was turning 22, Chris shows up at our bachelor apartment in Ocean Beach and wants to talk to me and my room mate Arthur Stone. You have to know that in my heart, I had sensed something, not quite sure what, but my heart was aching and Chris was there for a reason. He had a book tucked under his arm, and I didn't notice this at first, but Art sure did, as well as a friend that was smoking some pot with us when Chris dropped in. At first, we all said the usual greetings. I offered Chris a joint and some beer, but he politely said no thanks. Then he set his bible down on our coffee table and said that he wanted to share what was going on in his life, and how his brother had invited him to a week end men's conference. As soon as Chris mentioned Jesus name, my room mate Art and visiting friend jumped up and yelled at Chris to get out of the house, but I wanted to hear more, so I asked them to leave, which they did gladly. As Chris shared about Jesus, my heart leaped and I instantly became sober and asked Jesus into my heart and I've never been the same since . . .
