Charles Wolff replied to Nathan Gifford's discussion 'What is your measurement of successful music ministry?'
"After reading this, I decided I should play my dad's '57 Strat for the worship service Sunday morning.  If my (Epiphone) SG would stay in tune like the Strat, I'd play electric a lot more... I've been working on the…"

"Not to be snarky, but... have you tried calling around to see if there's a church in your area that is looking for a contemporary worship leader ?  It does seem like you've got a leader personality inside who is frustrated at not…"

Charles Wolff replied to Sam Lee's discussion 'Looking for smaller keyboard to accompany worship team'
"You probably already know this, but be careful about the time delay between the stage and the sound booth... if you're trying to play drums (or whatever) along with sound from the stage that's coming from 100 feet away, you're going…"

Charles Wolff replied to Nathan Gifford's discussion 'What is your measurement of successful music ministry?'
"I played in a non-church band for a little while a few months ago, but finally got dropped when I explained that if I was playing until late on a Saturday night, I had to get home directly after, I couldn't make a big side trip to take the…"

Charles Wolff replied to Nathan Gifford's discussion 'What is your measurement of successful music ministry?'
"Well, the pastor who started our church had a saying, "Any worship service you walk away from was a good worship service." (that's a play on the old line about landing an airplane) So on those days when we struggle, I tell myself…"

Charles Wolff replied to Nathan Gifford's discussion 'You get chord charts from where?!'
"Lorraine - if you dig around WorshipReady a little bit, you can find some charts that you can download as free .pdf files. I just went through this exercise and I remain convinced that in order to have a chart that works for our band, the way I want…"

Charles Wolff replied to Nathan Gifford's discussion 'You get chord charts from where?!'
"Yeah, I mean, if you can't just roll your own, you may well be lacking in the minimal musical skills a worship leader should have!"

Charles Wolff replied to Nathan Gifford's discussion 'Music Stands on the Platform'
"Actually, I think a lot of pastors DO memorize the sermon, or at least they give it without reading it word for word.  Though they have the advantage that there aren't four or five backup preachers trying to stay in sync with them. …"

Blue Christmas

Posted on December 22, 2008 at 3:26pm 1 Comment

Last night, our church had our first-ever "Blue Christmas" service. Here's an article that explains the idea:

Although I'm not playing in the worship band right now, I am still on the worship committee at church, and back in October or November I brought up the idea, and when I found out that the pastor was up for doing the service, I signed on to do the music (guy & guitar style). Hey Charles, I hope all is well with you. Retired but not out I hope.

You are a wise & experienced Man of God. Your wealth of experience is essential for new worship leaders to glean from. Even tho the songs are different today the key purpose is still the same. I really appreciate reading your comments to songwriters, outlining your thoughts about songs.

I have a similar outlook.

Worship songs = Singing to God.

Praise songs = Singing about God.

Testimony = personal story about experience.

Inspirational songs = encouragement to the church.

Keep commenting & being effective. This network needs your voice.

Blessings. Rick
