Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord. They rejoice all day long in your wonderful reputation. They exult in your righteousness. You are their glorious strength. Our power is based on your favor. Psalm 89:15-17 (NLT)
For some of us when we hear the phrase "call to worship" it conjures up images of the church bulletin. In many of our churches, regardless of denomination, there is a place somewhere near the top of the bulletin that says, "Call to Worship." And usually someone in the pulpit will conduct the "Call to Worship" by reading a scripture, or encouraging all in attendance to bring our hearts and minds to this physical place of worship. You do know that many of us are at church on Sunday, but our minds are somewhere else, right? Our hearts really aren't into it.
The call to worship really doesn't come from this side, but the other side - Heaven. The call comes from God Himself. The intentional worshiper is a blessed individual. First, those who truly answer the call to worship walk in the light of God's presence. Second, they rejoice in His excellent name (Psalm 148:13). Third, they recognize God is their strength. Finally, our power is based on His favor. And one more thing: they come before God in worship truthfully. They are real with God. They're not trying to fake and shake before God because they recognize He is all powerful and all knowing. This is worship in its purest form - laying it ALL out before Him; all my mess ups, my guilt, my nasty attitude - all of it.
Don't you want to spend the day walking in the light of God's presence? Since God gave us today, why not spend it with Him? I choose to worship. I hope you will, too.
