Preach to the Nineveh in Our Midst

The Book of Jonah 1-4 (NIV)
"The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”

But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD ... "

The Holy Spirit has been speaking to me about Jonah and Nineveh.

He said that Ninevites are in our midst. They are our pagan relatives, friends, neighbors, and co-workers who are idolaters, drunks, greedy, homosexuals, lesbians, prostitutes, murderers, non-believers.

Instead of preaching the good news of the Kingdom to them, many of us in the body of Christ are running from them just like Jonah ran from Nineveh.

Instead of speaking God's truth, being Christ's ambassadors of the message of reconciliation which leads to life, we speak the world's wisdom which leads to death. (Job 5:13, Psalm 94:11, 2 Corinthians 5:19-21)

We even partake in sin with them, instead of making disciples for our Savior. (Matthew 28:16-20)

Many of us are more concerned about ourselves, our things and our comfort than we are about the souls of people.

We are judging the Ninevites when we should be judging those calling themselves brother or sister in the Lord. (1 Corinthians 5:9-12)

We think that we are better than the Ninevites, but we were all just like them.

In our day-to-day existence, we forget that were made alive in Christ by Yahweh's grace, not by our works. (Ephesians 2:1-10)

We forget that none of us came to Christ by our own initiative. The Father drew us to Christ.

"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them ..." (John 6:44, NIV)

We ask God to give us more and more things to satisfy our lusts, to prove to ourselves that He is. But just like Jesus said, we are looking for the wrong proof .

Matthew 12:40-42 (MSG)
Jesus said, "You're looking for proof, but you're looking for the wrong kind. All you want is something to titillate your curiosity, satisfy your lust for miracles. The only proof you're going to get is what looks like the absence of proof: Jonah-evidence. Like Jonah, three days and nights in the fish's belly, the Son of Man will be gone three days and nights in a deep grave.

"On Judgment Day, the Ninevites will stand up and give evidence that will condemn this generation, because when Jonah preached to them they changed their lives. A far greater preacher than Jonah is here, and you squabble about 'proofs.' "
