"We Have Met to Worship" Hymn / Worship Chorus medley

My congregation is multi-generational, and we have been sharing hymn /chorus medleys in worship for some time, [such as "Amazing Grace / My Chains are Gone" and Travis Cottrell's "Just As I Am / I Come Broken (to be mended)"].  This is a new hymn / chorus medley of "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship" and my original chorus, "For He's Worthy".  I have called it "We Have Met to Worship", and we have used it in our own worship services a few times this Fall.  Our congregation has taken to it like they did "10,000 Reasons" (as though they'd been singing it all their lives).  It could be done with praise band and praise teams only.  We use praise band, praise teams, choir, and orchestra, so I also did an orchestration for it.  My question for the group is how often are you using similar hymn / chorus medleys, and how has your congregation responded as far as participation.  I'm seeing a lot more participation in singing (rather than observing) when we do worship songs that are less…See More

Psalm 100: A Prescription for Praise!

“Make a joyful moise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God; it is He that has made us and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise; be thankful unto Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good: His mercy is everlasting, and his truth endures to all generations.” -- Psalm 100 (all verses, 1 – 5)I love Psalm 100! These 5 short verses are a prescription for a life of thanksgiving and praise! Here we have the "why" of praise. Why do we praise God? * Because He is good... * Because His mercy is everlasting... * Because His truth endures to all generations... * Because we are His people... * Because He is like a Shepherd to us (He cares for our needs)... * Because the pasture is His (we dwell within His creation)... *…See More

Singing a New Song

What does the Bible have to say about new songs or new music, and what can new songs mean for us? Here are some scripture verses about a having a new song and thoughts about how new songs bring new life. A new song, wherever you are!Sing a new song to the LORD. Sing His praise from the ends of the earth, you people who sail on the seas and all the creatures that live in them, you coastlands and all who live on them.- Isaiah 42:10God has given us the gift of music so that we might creatively express thoughts and feelings with a depth of emotional and spiritual meaning that goes beyond what mere words can convey. He has given music as a tool whereby we might respond and communicate with each other and with Him. He has given us the ability to appreciate and enjoy music. And, He has given us the ability to create music. When we return a new song to God in praise, we have completed a circle of giving. He…See More

Confusion about Worship Music

Posted on February 17, 2013 at 9:41pm 8 Comments

Many believers struggle with knowing what is appropriate as far as music used in worship.  Unfortunately, many Pastors seldom preach about worship and may have done little study of the subject.  Other Pastors or Evangelists may have very limited preferences for what they feel is appropriate and preach these preferences as gospel.  God's people are often left confused or very opinionated about what is appropriate based upon their own preferences or upon what they have heard.  In over 30 years…
