"Playing power chords and "chugging" make a song more modern." - so true(myth)! I generally play guitar in a rock/ metal style but completely avoid chugging for worship music - totally cheesy and out of place in a worship context! It just sounds rub…

Maybe that is why some people have misconceptions about worshiping the Holy Spirit. Jesus and God the Father both have a personification that makes it easier to worshiped to. Some people forget that the Holy Spirit is a person, but then have a hard…

And you have the sharpened fourth (flattened fifth) interval, which was considered the devil's note, or the devil's interval in classical music: http://www.guardian.co.uk/notesandqueries/query/0,,-1767,00.html You don't hear this much in worship m…

There are many different British accents, but nevertheless, tomato isn't going to rhyme with potato like it does in the US, so careful with that one when writing a worship song!

That's why we banned it.

Who Paints The Skies is a very cheesy worship song by Stuart Townend. Here's a link to a sample (couldn't find it on youtube), but this is actually quite a "respectable" version, though you won't get the full picture without listening to the entire…

I think "non-fairies" were banned too! Basically we didn't want people who couldn't dance to save their lives to get up and prance around and call it "prophetic." Nothing against people dancing because that's what music makes them do no matter how g…

I think at the time (10 years ago), the way to lift a worship song was to modulate up a tone for the last couple of choruses. This was happening on nearly every song, everyone was doing it and we just got sick of it. I agree now, modulations are goo…

With the vast community of international users on this site I thought we should have a thread to discuss (and banter) the World Cup, the greatest sporting event in the world! For Americans on this site, we're talking about "soccer."Who do you think…

The post is mainly about musical clichés. When we start out writing songs (or doing anything new) we copy what we learn from others. So we should expect a few musical clichés from new song writers and hopefully they'll progress to be more creative.…

This is a great song - one of Matt R's best for a while. We've been doing it at church for months now and always goes down well with the congregation. I agree with Stevo's comment on Redman's delivery - certainly on his albums, but in a live worship…

Profile Information

Home Church:
Holy Trinity
Musical Gift(s):
Lead Guitarist, Band Coordinator/Arranger, Song Writer, Sound Engineer
About Me:
Hi, I'm Matt.
I love music and think it's an amazing gift God has given us so we can use it to glorify Him! I play lead guitar in our church worship band. It usually rocks when I play because that's how I play because God rocks! I also help coordinate the worship team, arrange songs and fill in on bass, keys and BVs when needed. I head up the PA team too.

I like to write songs when I get the time (probably procrastinate on this too much though). They're usually fairly rocky worship or God related tunes.

I run a recording studio and teach music tech at a local secondary school which is a media arts college.

When I'm not doing anything musical I'm usually supporting the BEST football club in the world, Bradford City, and socialising or doing other church stuff.
Favourite Music:
Queen, Dream Theater, Van Halen, Muse, U2, The Depeche Mode, Michael Jackson, Megadeth, Steve Vai, Marty Friedman, Transatlantic, Deep Purple, Incubus, Kasabian, Iona, The Killers, Queensrhyche, Pink Floyd, Rush, Primus, Sting, Mutemath, Madonna - Yes, these are more secular bands which does include some cheesy rock and metal! These do it musically for me more than most worship bands, and influence how my music sounds when I play guitar or write songs.

For Worship, I tend to listen to Tim Hughes, Matt Redman, Brian Doerkson, Lex Buckley, Soul Survivor, Hillsong (when they use more than the same usual 4 chords), Michael W Smith, The Gathering Band, Lakewood, Delirious... I have a very open and varied taste and like most styles except RnB and boy bands.
Favourite Books / Authors
Mere Christianity (CS Lewis), The Heavenly Man (Brother Yun), God's Smuggler (Brother Andrew), With Christ In The School Of Prayer (Andrew Murray - not the tennis player), Authors - R.T. Kendall, Jeff Lucas, J John, J.I. Packer, Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling (but it's quicker to watch the movies), J.R.R. Tolkien (also quicker to watch the movies)
Favourite Bible Verses / Passages:
Psalm 73.25-26: "Who have I in heaven but you? And I desire no one on earth as much as you! My health fails, my spirits droop, yet God remains! He is the strength of my heart; he is mine forever!"

Hey Matt, yeah thanx for taking the time to comment.
I lived most of my life in Canada. Very conservative, but calypso, reggae and music in general can reach anyone, anywhere, anytime. We have played and sang on the Six Nations Reserve, in Traditional Churches and everything in between. It just takes a willingness to try something something new:)

Hi Matt!
Thank you so much for your feedback on my song! It really blessed and encouraged me. Thanks for the advice as well--really appreciate it. Am hoping to do a more "real" recording of it at my church, so will take your advice into account! Thanks again. I'm just going to give your song a listen. Be blessed and have a great week! thanks again :)
