"Why do you think a song needs to make sense?"

The title of this post comes from a question one of my group asked me recently.  We were going over songs various people had enjoyed during a recent summer conference, and I had said I didn't like…Continue

OK, first the background story..... one of our church members recently donated a guitar to me. It used to belong to her husband, who (very sadly) died of cancer a few years back - it has been in her…Continue

Profile Information

Home Church:
St John's Yeadon
Musical Gift(s):
Guitar, songwriting, vocals (sort of), other bits and pieces
About Me:
I am the worship leader for St. John's Church, Yeadon, U.K. (http://www.stjohnsyeadon.org) - a smallish, but growing, church just north of Leeds, West Yorkshire. I've been writing worship songs, on and off, for about 13 years, when I get the time. This isn't so very often: I'm married, and a father of four young children! I also have a day-job - I am a lecturer in the maths department at the University of Leeds.
Favourite Music:
Worship stuff: Stuart Townend, Tim Hughes, Holy CD, Neil Bennetts.....

Other stuff: Radiohead, the latest "TV on the Radio" album (Dear Science), KT Turnstall, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, Jeff Buckley, Damien Rice, Bill Frissel....
Favourite Books / Authors
For Christian stuff, it has to be NT Wright, especially "Jesus and the Victory of God", and "The Resurrection of the Son of God", "Paul, Fresh Perspectives", "Surprised by Hope".....

For general fiction, I really like David Mitchell's work (Cloud Atlas and Ghostwritten especially).
Favourite Bible Verses / Passages:
Too many to choose from.

Bible study
Last autumn, I tried writing a set of bible studies, covering (in a broad brush way) the "whole of the bible" in seven studies. Take a look here, if you're interested.

You bet! It's a healthy discussion. I like to get to bottom of things no matter if someone agrees with me or not.

Hi Daniel,

Welcome to "I'm Refugee from He Must Increase.com".

Do you think we might be able to get Julia to come over to the other side as well?

Daniel Read replied to Steve Wilson's discussion 'key choice?'
"I do it in key of E.  I use a Shubb C7 partial capo on second fret, covering the A, D and G strings of the guitar.... so chord shapes are from key of D, as in: Bless the Lord [A (G) ] oh my soul [E (D)] etc... This works well."

Daniel Read replied to Cliff Jeffrey's discussion 'Learning guitar fast.'
"For the C chord, I really would recommend just practicing until you can play the standard one: 01023x Practice chord changes until it feels natural, so play G - C - G - C -G - C repeatedly until you can change quickly.  Muscle memory is what is…"

"In key of C, if you want to avoid the F chord, there are two options: Capo 3 (left hand side original chord, right hand side new chord that you play) C -> A F -> D G -> E or, Capo 5 (my preferred option) C -> G F -> C G -> D Am…"

Daniel Read replied to Keith Amano's discussion 'Breathe (Your Spirit)' in the group Songwriter's Circle - Get Song Feedback
"Hello Keith I like the chorus tune - I think that works really well.  It has a strong tune, and I think suits the lyrics well. I wonder whether you could think a bit more about the verses - the tune seems fairly flat (in the sense that it…"

Broken body (My Lord Away)

This is a song I wrote, mostly on Easter Saturday. It's been a while since I last wrote anything.... the lyrics are below.  The recording is a very rough one.Broken body on a tree Broken bones and shattered dreams I said I’d follow, come what may But they took my Lord awayWe had hoped he was the one Who would make God’s kingdom come Make his people great again But they took my Lord awayAnd as we watched, they led him there And all our hopes hung with him there Him that caused the blind to see…See More

Daniel Read replied to Stevo's discussion 'Worship and Theology? A barrier?'
