Charles Wolff replied to Sue's discussion 'Using Audacity to rip vocals from music'
"Well, sure, let's dig into this again. First off, I think CCLI is generally a good thing.  While they don't always define exactly what you can do with a song, they provide legal access to (and cataloging of) a large body of P/W…"

Charles Wolff replied to Joe Aiken's discussion 'O Take Me Back'
"Okay, I had a really hard time following the rhythm of the lyric and the rhythm of the guitar at the same time. It feels like maybe you were listening to a click track or a bass that the rest of us weren't in on. After listening six or eight…"

Charles Wolff replied to Michael Wolsey's discussion 'Song of Praise'
"First observation is that, for a "song of praise" this is SOOOO slow.  Think about reworking it so that the lyrics go by about twice as fast. Angela's points are good.  On the subject of tightening the lyric - just because…"

Charles Wolff replied to Nathan Gifford's discussion 'What songs are you planning for 2018?'
"Well, if it helps anybody out, I just did some youtubing and came up with a list of things (I think they're all fairly recent worship songs) to try out...  these are my notes from listening to the first minute or so of each song, these are…"

Charles Wolff replied to Wulf Forrester-Barker's discussion 'What notation do you give your team?'
"And a happy Sunday to you, too :-(  I was expecting to read that on Sunday the bass shows up and plays unnecessarily complex lines, off the beat and occasionally a half-step north or south of the rest of the club. We long ago gave up trying to…"

Charles Wolff replied to Nathan Gifford's discussion 'Christmas 2017 plans'
"For anybody else trying to work out Advent setlists at the last minute (like me), here are some notes I took on a bunch of songs I wasn't familiar with.  For the record, our band has kind of a country-rock feel to it, nothing too heavy,…"

Charles Wolff replied to Doug Hupp's discussion 'Four Simple Tricks For Rewriting A Song'
"All right, I'll add my four tips, and these are pretty specific to "worship" songs, and to getting worship leaders to listen to / use your song: - keep the melody within a single octave, and resist all temptation to "go up an…"

Charles Wolff replied to Nathan Gifford's discussion 'Christmas 2017 plans'
"Since the Sunday will be December 24th, I think what we agreed on was that there will be a single morning service with the contemporary band (we normally have one contemporary and one choir), then the children's whatever around 5 pm and the…"

Blue Christmas

Posted on December 22, 2008 at 3:26pm 1 Comment

Last night, our church had our first-ever "Blue Christmas" service. Here's an article that explains the idea:

Although I'm not playing in the worship band right now, I am still on the worship committee at church, and back in October or November I brought up the idea, and when I found out that the pastor was up for doing the service, I signed on to do the music (guy & guitar style). Our church has connections to… Continue

Hey Charles, I hope all is well with you. Retired but not out I hope.

You are a wise & experienced Man of God. Your wealth of experience is essential for new worship leaders to glean from. Even tho the songs are different today the key purpose is still the same. I really appreciate reading your comments to songwriters, outlining your thoughts about songs.

I have a similar outlook.

Worship songs = Singing to God.

Praise songs = Singing about God.

Testimony = personal story about experience.

Inspirational songs = encouragement to the church.

Keep commenting & being effective. This network needs your voice.
