I agree with Rick. You can go anywhere you want to go as long as the transitions are right. If you wanted to do a fast song next, you could also start it by singing the chorus or a bridge slowly and then kicking into the intro. This transition build…

I couldn't agree more, Rick. I'm getting tired of buying a CD I think will be good and finding 90 percent of it unusable. al www.everydaypraise.com

I like the phrase "narrative structure" that Dorothy used. I try to keep the songs thematically connected while varying the musical style, rhythm or tempo. Once, at a Willow Creek conference, I heard Joe Horness say that when he selects a song he as…

Nice song, Chris. I'd have to agree with the "drowning" comments. Time to get out the Thesaurus. It reminds me of a song like "Worthy, You Are Worthy" or "Take This Life". Instead of a B section maybe a key change for each verse might do the trick.…

I've been thinking a lot about this lately too, Andy (thanks to Tom Jackson and his blogposts). Back in the day we called it "creating a flow", and I think it comes in a couple of ways: inside the song and outside the song. There are moments inside…

If anyone deserved respect, it was David: Anointed giant killer, mighty warrior, winner of the “Battle of the Bands – Harp Shred” numerous times. So why was he being chased around the desert by the king and his army? He probably felt as respected as Rodney Dangerfield (“I don't get no respect. The king told me to go outside and play 'Dodge the Chariot'”). God had anointed him king; where was the respect?

Just For Fun: A "Mad Libs" for Music Teams

Here is a “Mad Libs” type word game to play with your music team. If you've never played Mad Libs before, it's quite simple. Designate one person to hold the sheet with the “story” and, without revealing the content, ask each person to provide a word that corresponds with part of speech in the blank. After all the words are collected, the story is read back with the given words. The more outlandish the words, the funnier the story. Let me know how it works for you!

Anyone Can Sing

Eldon couldn't carry a tune in a bike basket, unless that tune was one note somewhere between F and F#. And I was attending college to be a music minister and had it in my head that anyone could learn to sing with proper ear training. I don't remember if I had heard this from a professor or if I had dreamed it one night, but I decided that I would teach Eldon to sing.

Eldon was more excited about my little experiment than I was.

We started out with high/low recognition. I would play a note on… Continue

What Worship Means To Me

(This was my guest post on Jeff Miller's "Consuming Worship" website www.consumingworship.org)

What Worship Means to Me

This sounds a lot like the essays I wrote in grade school like “What Did You Do This Summer” or “I Will Not Throw Spit Wads At Mike Smothers” … oops, that last one wasn't an essay... anyway, worship has been defined by a whole google of people (you like that?) and to me it's one of those things that are like the floating fuzz on the surface of your eye – the more you try to… Continue

More Water, Anyone?

If I were Elijah I would probably be wondering if I'd heard God right. We're on Mt. Carmel with 450 prophets of Baal scattered on the ground exhausted, bleeding, and crying like babies and God wants me to dig a trench around the altar I've just rebuilt and fill it full of WATER? “Don't you mean FODDER?” No, water. And just dump it on everything; He wants it good and wet. (I Kings 18:20-40 if you need a refresher)

God didn't want to leave any doubt that when the fire fell from heaven and consume… Continue

Thanks for the add- I like your stuff! I'm relatively new to worship songwriting, self-publishing and such (www.wordlikefire.com), so any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Al, our feedback problem is much better! Thanks for asking!
In fact, our stage volume has been really low this month due to temporarily losing our electric guitar player (you can see my note in the prayer circle on that). Good news is that I think there has been a huge spiritual advance in his life and so we hope to have him back sometime in June.
I covet all prayers about my no-drummer situation ... Lost the main drummer this week over a miscommunication. Meanwhile (in addition to what I wrote on the prayer wall) the backup drummer is on vacation for two weeks (with wife, keyboard player) - and they are studying the book "Reimagining Church" which categorizes any church with a building and a pastor as "institutional," claiming the answer to be home churches. I think the author's points seem less grounded in scripture and more grounded in his own restlessness ... So I hope the truth will rise to the top for these two, but it is possible we could lose them soon.
Good thing is, I think God is showing me that the spiritual bar on the worship team must be raised - not every musically gifted person should be leading worship ... my new "bar" for us is that we are all spiritually solid in our faith and that we all "get" The Edge. ie, now mandatory for all members: Edge 101 membership class. Sounds a little rigid, but I'm feeling awfully burned and it's no fault but my own. Is this how Matt Redman felt when he lost the whole band and wrote "Heart of Worship"? :)
How are you doing?
(Do you know any good drummers in the Twin Cities? Lol) Sorry I went so long on this note! I know that God is still in control in this situation and probably orchestrating it all.
