Hey guys. I thought I'd share what I use as well.

I use a Dunlop slasher wah, it's really powerful. I'd definitely recommend this wah. Some people don't like the distortion feature, but it does wonders for me.

 

Visual Sound Route 66 Overdrive/Compressor: I love this compressor and I love the overdrive. It's not a full pack a punch type overdrive, but it feels more like a good boost overdrive. I use it for quieter lead parts, or whenever I just need something small to cover space.

 

Maxon 808 Tubescreamer: Definitely my favorite overdrive! It's worth every penny! It's the perfect Overdrive for the sets I do.

 

Dunlop PB & J delay: There aren't many different sound functions to this delay. It's a simple Mix/Repeat/Time delay. However, if you are looking for a basic delay, this surprising delay beats all of them! You can find them running for only $60-80, but I promise you, if Boss or Line 6 or somebody else made this delay, it would be in the mid $100s. It's definitely worth the buy.

 

I also run some other pedals that I rarely use, like the Boss DS-1 and the Phaser 90, but I'm honestly not a big fan of them. I'll add to my collection eventually, but this is what I have so far. I'm also lookin to get a Strymon Blue sky reverb. If you haven't yet, youtube it to hear the lush, synth like sounds that it makes.

 

As for my electric gear, I run a Gibson Les Paul Silverburst Studio with a 330 watt Ampeg AX-70 hybrid (tube + solid state) amp. It's not the greatest amp, but I'm on a low budget and it does the job in my church, which can fit about 300-400 people. Once in a while, I'll also use a Fender Hot Rod Deville, but it can be quite overkill. I can barely pass 4 on the volume knob before people's ears start to bleed. Great amp!

 

I've been lookin for some more powerful overdrives. I love my Maxon 808, but I like having different overdrives for different tones. Any suggestions? If not, then I'd like to see what some of you guys are using as well. God bless!

Nathan - Digitech tend toward OTT effects and this unit is also at the budget end of their range, and will probably be pre-programmed to make metalhead kids think "wow, so much gain!". However congratulations on not buying a POD.

 

First question - are you planning to use this through a guitar amp, direct to PA or both?

 

If you plan to play through an amp only then you should turn off cabinet simulation. Because your amp is already shaping the tone naturally, doing this a second time will tend to give poor results. However if you are going to send the signal to the PA then you'll need to leave this on and put up with the consequences through your own amp. :P

 

When I've used modelers, the best way I've found to program is to start with no effects at all and get a good basic tone completely dry. Set your guitar amp EQ completely flat - all settings at mid point - and then adjust the settings of the modeler to create the tone you need. That way every patch gets a chance to start from the same place, and if you DO need to alter the EQ live then you'll have some room to adjust. Next add in effects (including overdrive or distortion - treat the gain level as an effect) one by one with a idea of what final sound you want. Do this starting with gain levels, then EQ, compression, modulation and finally reverb/delay. Along the way you're bound to find some interesting tones 'by accident' but try to focus on getting the sounds you need, rather than the ones that sound 'interesting'. Be aware that playing alone it will sound better with different EQ to what's needed with a band.

 

My other suggestion - not intended badly - would be to sell it again quickly while you can get something for it and buy an older, higher spec processor with better tones or a couple of individual pedals (like the Danelectro cool cats). I still use a Korg processor that's nearly 18 years old, and sounds better for everything except 'brootz' than any modeler I've heard. The old Boss ME6 and Digitech RP6 and RP10 from the same era were both excellent too, and should be avauilable really cheap on the 'bay.

I recently took a good look at a friend's setup. He runs his guitar into a nice effects board. The output goes into a direct box that spilts to a mic cord for the house sound mixer and a 1/4" cable goes into his amp to act as his monitor. I like the idea of being able to control the final sound to that degree. What takes some of the zeal out for me is learning how to use the processor.

I've bought a used Digitech RP200A and was starting to customize some effects cominations. When I set them up on a practice amp, The effects selections sounded TERRIBLE on my regular amp. That seemed a little discouraging and I've not played at any services with the Digitech yet.

Arer there any suggestions for geting good settings? The presets just don't thrill me.

I guess you're right.  I didn't read any of the posts prior to posting the link. 

It might be time to create a group for gear idolaters.  I'm sure there are several people that would appreciate it; I know I struggle with it all the time, and my wife is the only one who really calls me on it.

LOL!!! I think the name of this group is hilarious.  I get that pretty much all the groups have Worship at the front of the title, but being a person who personally struggles with "gear idolatry" myself, I have to admit part of me was hoping this was like an AA group for guitar players or something. 

Does anyone else find it more than slightly ironic that most likely any "worship leader" who would be attracted to a group like this probably struggles with worshiping guitar effects?

Line 6 XT Live directly into the board via direct box. Works great with a combination of guitars, my Gibson Les Paul, L4a, or Traveling Songwriter. Also great with Telecaster and Stratacoustic. Very versatile.
