If you're a gear head like me, the first things you do after a concert (especially small worship ones) is try to get close enough to see the goods (guitars, amps, effects). This is maybe my favorite part of the concert because I'm a huge nerd. Many artists tip their hand on blogs and websites, showing the rest of us what's in their arsenal.

So this area is a place where we care share those rigs that cause us to salivate like one of Pavlov's pups. Please post pics and detail if you can, so we can get those of so familiar symptoms of Gear Acquisition Syndrone (heart palpitations, shortness of breath, flop sweat, loose stool, etc...)

For sure it's about the end product. I would say that for technical skill in riffing the like of Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen surpass The Edge. However, when you compare the end product, The Edge blows EVH and Vai out of the water. I have more respect for a guy like The Edge that can take a simple riff and create beautiful music, there's more art in his music. I'll probably catch some flak for saying this, but I can't stand Steve Vai or EVH, I think their music is a little tacky. Just my opinion.
I agree with you, most of VH is tacky and a good bit of Steve Vai. But you have to love that classic EVH brown sound on Unchained and a few other tunes of theirs. And Tender Surrender and Breathing a Prayer are floating around out there on Youtube and they're definitely impressive music. (If you can get past Vai's arrogant gesturing and self-absorbed body language.)

However, I'm not sure I'd put Edge into such an elevated category. He's been able to do a lot with a little, but he's done so much boring and repetitive material too. Remove Paul Hewson KBE and U2 never gets anywhere.

So to tie this back to your original post, here's a great example of how G.A.S. can actually HELP you!
Sorry, I know this is an old thread but I was shocked when I read this. EVH "tacky"? From someone who has Eruption as his cell-phone ring tone I am disgusted by this statement. I know some Van Halen stuff is very cheesy, especially their 80s keyboard stuff, but EVH's guitar playing took what Jimi Hendrix had done to the next level! Where would Michael Jackson be if he hadn't had EVH do the solo in Beat It?

Ok, EVH might have spawned loads of kids trying to impress everyone with their tapping, but his sound, technique and style was pretty ground breaking in the 70s - way ahead of its time. The Edge is cool too. I probably use a lot more Edge style guitar playing and effects in worship than EVH. I've seen U2 live twice and they're totally amazing! But EVH tacky? A shocking statement!
Blows EVH and Vai out of the water? That's not even remotely true.
