Hey all,
The other day I was listening to the song "All you did was save my life" by the band our lady peace. Such a great song, and I was thinking it would work well in a Church service. That got me thinking, how often do you guys use songs by non-christian groups in your services, and what do you think about it? What are some criteria you would place on a song to allow it to be played in your church?

Food for thought.

Here is a link if you wanna give it a listen:

DISCLAMER!: Our Lady Peace is not a band of Christians! many of their songs are terrific, but much of their material [mostly older stuff] has questionable themes and cursing. So if you decide to listen to more of their music be aware.

The closest I have ever gotten is 40 by U2. But have thought of using several...I Feel Good, Shout, several others that I can't remember right now. Of course some of the words would be redone on most but I feel a good worship song is a good worship song, regardless of the source. God spoke through a donkey, He can speak through anyone. : )
I definitely agree that worship songs don't have to be by "Christian worship artists" but I think it's really important to really get into the meanings behind the lyrics. Just as much scrutiny should be put on non-Christian songs as on Christian songs. What do the lyrics mean? What do they say about God? Are the messages given by the lyrics true to what's written in the Bible?
That is a good thought. Did you have a chance to listen to the song? what did you think about it?
hey even judas priests's angel is amazing song and today at church i thought about it n came home tto see this post......but the thing is how people will react once dey know its non christain
What sort of filters would you run a song through to approve it for use in your ministry?
I think for filters on non Christian worship songs, as long as I explained to the church the meaning of the song and what this specific song said, I wouldn't hesitate with other criteria. Perhaps a song is fitting for 1 moment, we've done songs before to fit with a ministry theme etc... I remember doing a Foo Fighters track 'Best of You', as part of a theme, about who gets your loudest shout.

Hope that helps

What about taking part of a secular song and weaving it into the worship. Like the line from "With or Without You" by U2 "and you give yourself away...". Then you could turn it around and sing "and I give myself to You..." Thoughts?
