Hey Meri - I have been working on a a bowing style (possibly 'inventing" may be more accurate) on my bass and treble Viola da Gambas that mimics the minor key "boom-chucka" strum style on guitar. If I get around to recording again you may have the chance to hear it.

Marty - actually I use Super Sensitive Sensicore strings.  They are a synthetic (nylon) core and sound warm like gut strings but are not as affected by humidity and temperature. Steel strings will give an overly bright sound, which is ok if you are doing bluegrass or western swing but probably not good for most worship music.

Suggestions for beginner: Scales, scales and more scales.

A question for everyone, what brand of strings do you recommend for the best sound? I'm not concerned about the cost, please help!!! Are steel strings the best for a warm sound?

I play "rock and roll" violin with the worship band most Sundays. I learned classical-style, but the worship leader doesnt use sheet music, just lead sheets, so I've found that playing the chords with various rhythmns works very well. Its mostly bowing techniques for me.

Does anyone know of any sheet music resources for popular worship songs?

I'm new to this instrument. I've played others for many years by ear, no formal training.
Any tips for a beginner other than lessons?

Hi y'all, Nick invited me to join this group - so I will drop some lines: I play the cello since I was 6 (and now I am in the mid-30's) - and learned it the classical way - but always tried to play with the "cool guys" with their guitars and basses... didn't work out pretty well when I was younger. Since more than 10 years I am using my cello in our services in both ways (classical and modern). Since nearly 3 years I additionally play an electric cello as well -> which makes a great difference in the range of possibilities and opens up great new chances. All the best to you - and be blessed!

Hi!
Surprisingly, the violin is my very first instrument,
then while learning that I started to play the guitar,
then my parents bought me a drum set,
so I kinda started to neglect my violin and went more towards the drums and guitar... my parents will soon buy me a bass guitar whoop whoop!
and im also planning to get a keyboard(which I atleast know something about).
well anyways... I stumbled upon my dusty dusty violin yesterday..
and I played it with the song "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High," cuz I was teaching my friend how to play the guitar and my other friend the drums..
then I was thinking, what would be the easiest to jam to?
and I thought, Oh yeah, LILYNOH is an easy song..
so I taught them that and then I saw the vioilin, and I though maybe I should give it a try... then I did, and they said, we didnt know you were so good with the violin and stuff like that.. I was like, uhm.. I just havent played in a really really long time, like 2years?. so
my question is... how do I incorporate a violin in rockish worship music?
I mean, I wanna do adlibs also, but only by widowing(any ideas on how to imporve widowing?)

Hi All,
I've been playing since I was 7 trained classically with teachers that put technique and hand position foremost. I began being interested in giving the violin a new voice other than the typical classical standard pieces so I began to improvise and write at age 13. I tried all kinds of music from jazz, blues, folk, Irish/Celtic, punk, hardcore until I developed my own sound. I've toured England, Europe, Ireland, Scandinavia with secular bands and recording artists galore...then the Lord made Himself known to me and gave me NEW LIFE as well as new music. I began playing in worship teams from 1997. I play other instruments but it seems the violin has a profound effect on people! As far as improvisation, it is my favorite place to be with nothing planned just soaring with hopefully all the ability to play whatever I'm hearing in my heart. Worship songs have so many horn parts, harmonies and ways you can change the feel and I tend to play them with a definite idea each time, but sometimes I hear new parts. Thanks for this part of the site and getting to know you all!
I am a violin teacher and love it...although it IS very difficult to learn; you must constantly be tweaking your technique toward getting it right--doesn't all happen at once!

I do play music in church but not the violin I'm afraid.
In fact I have only just started taking violin lessons. My daughter and I wanted something to do together and we both thought we would like to have a go, so be booked lessons and bought violins. Even the basics seem heard and not just the fingering and bowing either. I am self taught on everything else I play, so it's a really good discipline and fills in some of the basics of music I never got round to learning.
