Has anyone else ever done any studio work as a string player? As a cellist who can improvise, I get calls from time to time. I try to take the gigs whenever I can. There's just something fun about playing in the studio (even as demanding as the work can be). Does any one else have any fun studio stories to share? :)

I first started doing studio recording on the violin when I was a teenager in a rock band. In my 20's I was living in London joined a band that had records on the radio and we recorded in some cool places, but for most of the songs we had rehearsed the parts. For me recording usually means there are set parts, harmonies, build-ups that are exact and need lots of rehearsing with everyone to get a good feeling and tight in-the-pocket rhythm, but my favorite is when there is a solo instrumental where I never rehearse but let my inner hearing (and hopefully listening to the Holy Spirit) produce whatever is happening at the moment (in the right chord and key of course) which is possible if you know your instrument well enough to find the notes you are hearing instantly. Improvisation 101. There is where I am alive and well. coming up with the finished solo usually means I ask the engineer to record the very first take because my best ideas are there. Might need to fix or change a few things after I hear it back, or try some more takes on different tracks to make a collage of the cool stuff from each. I've often had to go in to record without ever even hearing the song before and find things on the fly..that's exhilarating too! It's a GIFT by the Grace of God!
Lovely, thank you for sharing. Absolutely inspirational. :)
