A little encouragement based on Psalm 91. Just a little grown up lullaby.

I wanted to write a song using the beautiful truths in Psalm 91, without using the words dwell, abide, shelter, or wings. I think I did ok.

The “voice” is God singing to us. In essence He’s asking us all these tough questions that we ask ourselves…thing is He’s here for us and has always been. He’s the answers. Kind of a quit fooling yourself and just trust me kind of song.

You Will Make It (Psalm 91)
2009 Russ Hutto

D D2
What do you do when you
Dsus D
Feel like the world is wrong
D D2
What do you do when you
Dmaj7 D
Find yourself all alone

D D2
How do you make it through
Dsus D
When others are falling
D D2
How do you make it through
Dmaj7 D
When the end is calling

G A D Em G
Look around you, I surround you, I’ll never let you go
G A D Em G
Open your eyes, No-o more lies, I’ll never let you go

D A Em G
Have no fear, I am here
D A G
You are safe within
D A Em G
Be at peace, I am here
D E G
You will make it to the end

Where do you find the light
When the day turns to night
Where do you find the light
When you’ve lost your si-ight

Who do you tu-rn to
When nothing’s availing
Who do you tu-rn to
When your hope is failing

I like this! But, of course, some suggestions:

Think about starting the song with the chorus (or maybe the "Look around you..." pre-chorus and the chorus). Establish right off that this is God speaking. I think that will help the listener understand the context of the "you" verses that follow better.

On the verses where the 2nd and 4th lines end in a two-syllable word (fall-ing, etc.), I think it would work better if you can hold out the last important word before, so that the TSW starts on the beat... "When the end..... is | calling" and like that (actually, that particular line is probably the least clumsy). The TSWs sound clumsy the way they're being sung right now. "When others... are | falling"

For congregational singing, would probably want to do this a bit faster, and, actually, for congregational singing, it might work better if you re-cast it as "the worshiper" singing - "What do I do when I feel that the world is wrong?" and so on. and then "Have no fear, God is here..." Don't know if this is a priority for you, but if you could re-craft it that way without using masculine pronouns to refer to God, that would be cool too, assuming you can do it so that it doesn't sound like you just changed all the "He's" to "God"... if you recast this like this, then you'd probably want to start with the verse...

This lullaby is sweet, with a tender vulnerability. I love it just as it is. I think the perfect setting for this would be soaking with just the guitar, or perhaps a cello, as well. I would sing this to Jesus, just as I would sing this to my children as I rock them. .... and I think that's what Jesus would do for us, too.

I don't know if this is your final version, or you plan on doing more to it, but would you please post the final here?

:-) Blessings,
Nicki
