An adaptation of the hymn - I'm not sure what to do with it. Any feedback is appreciated. As always, ignore the poor singing!

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in Thee;

Let the water and the blood,

From Thy riven side which flowed,

Be of sin the double cure;

Cleanse me from its guilt and power

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in Thee

Not the labour of my hands

Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;

Could my zeal no respite know,

Could my tears forever flow,

All for sin could not atone;

Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,

Simply to Thy cross I cling;

Naked, come to Thee for dress;

Helpless look to Thee for grace;

Foul, I to the fountain fly;

Wash me, Saviour, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,

When mine eyes shall close in death,

When I soar through tracts unknown,

See Thee on Thy judgment throne,

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in Thee.

Nothing in my hand I bring,

Simply to Thy cross I cling

I love this old hymn! That is a nice laid back arrangement.

I rewrote some of the lyrics, added a chorus, and rocked it up. Here is the version I recorded for my last CD.

I don't have the Chord chart here on this computer, but let me know if you want it and I'll upload that too. The CD version is in the key of A, but when I lead it for worship I lead it in G.

God Bless

Thanks for this. Actually my dilemma is that I think my version could have a laid back feel or have a more upbeat Celtic rock style, and I don't know what would work best. The words for this hymn certainly are fantastic!
Hi Richard,
REALLY enjoyed your rendition of Rock of Ages! I really liked the worshipful feel you've given it - I could see it being sung as an alter call or communion music. One small suggestion I might make is you might consider con-temporizing the language as you've done with the music and the melody. "Could my zeal no respite know" is using the archaic language and I'm guessing no one but theology majors knows what in the world that means. Also, I would consider changing the "THY's" to "your's" and the "Thou's" to "You's" and the "mine's" to "my's". It just brings things more into the 20th century.

You have a beautiful melody here. Try singing it with the more contemporary words and see what you think. You might completely disagree with me - certainly the original hymn writer's language has a certain beauty, but if you're worshiping with your song in a more contemporary setting, your congregation may actually find it easier to sing (and understand). Blessings and keep up the good work!
Wow - thanks for the nice comments! :) I think you have a point, and I'll look into changing the less familiar words. There's a problem in changing the 'Thee's to 'You's where the rhyming depends on it so I might stick with those.
Yeah - Most people who know the hymn are probably comfortable with the "Thee" in the chorus. I was primarily talkin' about where they sit in the middle of the phrase and don't affect the rhyming scheme. Although - changing the "Thee" at the end of the chorus (even though "you" doesn't rhyme) still works because of the more contemporary word and because of the opposites you're showing (Me and You).

Have a blessed day!
David
Nice rewrite nice laid back performance. I am biased to simple productions and stripped down as this is it still carries it's weight.
