Wrote this song this morning. Hope you like it. I recorded it in the key of Ebm, playing capo 6 in Am. I think I'll go ahead and bump it up to Em so I can play it deeper and more open, but had not practiced it in that key yet. I messed up on the line "When we will know as we are known", so please take that into account. This is a rough recording after rehearsal, taught the djembe player the song, and we went for it.

Not Yet (There Will Be a Day)
Words and Music by Doug Lane
Jan 14, 2010

There will be a day
When death and pain will cease
When the suffering of this world will end
And we will live in peace
There will be a day
When the Lord will descend
When the Kingdom of this world will fall
And all will bow before Him
But not yet, not yet

Come Lord Jesus
Righteous Judge, Holy God
Come mighty King and rule over us
Let us bow our hearts to serve Him
Those who fear Him, great and small
Let us glorify His name on earth
Until His Kingdom Comes
Lord Let Your Kingdom come

There will be a day
When there will be no night
When we dwell in His city
And the Lord will be our light
There will be a day
When all will pass away
When we will know as we are known
And we'll see Him face to face
But not yet, not yet

Hey Doug, nice job. I really like the minor key and the feel of the song. I like the phrasing you used with "there will come a day" then the break and continued lines with syncopation. The phrasing works well for the feel of the song. The theme is exactly what the church should be singing. Well done.
How did you get the inspiration to write this?
Blessings,
Paul
Paul,
It started with "Not Yet". I've begun to feel, through the years, the sense that there are tremendous promises in the Bible, but many of them are yet unfulfilled. We have hope, but the hope is not necessarily based on present circumstances. Rather, we look forward to what God declares will be one day, but not yet. There will be peace on earth, but not yet. There will be freedom from pain, suffering, death, and sorrow, but not yet. In one sense, we have those things, but at the same time the fullness has not yet been realized. In eschatological terms, it's the tension between "the Kingdom is Here" and "the Kingdom is coming".

As for the melody, it just came to me in the car. The song was written in a couple of hours and recorded later that evening. I tend to write in bursts. In any case, I'm glad you like it. Hope you and others decide to use it in your churches. If so, let me know.

God bless,
Doug
Thanks for sharing the story - its cool how God works and stirs thoughts in us.

Hi Doug,

I really like the guitar riff on this one. I tend to focus on the music first, then the words second. This song caught my interest from the beginning. I generally have a lot of jazz / latin influence in what I write and this one has lots of possibilities in that vein. Being a "music guy", I think it would be great fun to take this song and put a full band behind it. The cadence would lend itself to an unusual arrangement (at least from a praise and worship song standpoint). It could be a real "mover".

Of course, the words are the payoff and the music is useless without them in our world. The message is important and one that people are at times afraid to say much about for fear of sounding too "end of the world freakish". But truth is truth and this song is packed with it.

Nice Song.
I'm not sure why this feels like such a strange topic - it's central to our hope in Christ! He's returning! But you're right, it's kind of a strange one to sing about these days...

Glad you like it. I'm hoping and praying that I can get better recordings, can get them sent off and picked up by someone. I don't want to be a recording artist, but I would really like to see some of my songs published.

Anyone using any of my songs in church, other than me?
I agree ... it shouldn't feel strange. There are some great old classics with the same topic like "Jesus is coming soon!". I wrote a song a few years back about the rapture called "Disappear". Of course, that one is only a classic to me!

I don't know what you used to record your song, but the quality was fine. However, a multi-track digital recorder off of eBay can be had for very little these days. I bought a used one last spring which replaced about half of the gear in my home studio for about $300! You can get some for under $100. You just have to be patient.
We recorded off of the church soundboard. The same way we record sermons on Sunday. Thank you for being gracious. I suppose I'm just nitpicky because it's mine.
Good song Doug! I can hear a big sound with trumpets and other brass instuments, percussion and drums giving a latin beat. Also backing singers singing 3rds above and other harmonies. The words are powerful and give a clear message and I like how you move from asking the Lord to come to asking the people to bow hearts to serve Him..It speaks to Jesus and it speakes to His people, Very nice job Doug.
I hadn't really considered the latin angle. Actually when I first conceived it, I was thinking more Gospel/R&B. Of course, I don't have an ounce of R&B in me, but hey! I'd be open to any kind of interpretation!

Thanks for the positive feedback, John.
