It seems to me every smaller church worship leader I've ever known has had some near crisis level "hole" in their team. For me, it's the bass player I don't have. I was wondering what some others are experiencing. Better yet, has anyone discovered an effective way to solve this problem - beyond the "make due with what you've got and pray" plan?

that is the truth! there is so much more you can do with the real thing! :)
We don't really have any problems filling spots on our team. We have plenty of musicians. The part we tend to struggle with is getting everyone to flow together. Our musicians have very different backgrounds and a wide variety of ages. Us younger guys tend to go towards more of a modern sound and some of our older guys go towards a more "80's" direction. Its kinda strange when you pull out a song from hillsong and you have one guy doing dotted 8th and another doing chords with a mix of flange and distortion. (flange + distortion= bad idea) I don't mean this to harp on anyone, there is a time and a place for all of the different styles. It's just when you mix the two, it can be really bad sometimes.
We do things real different to any church I have ever been in...
We actively look at who is visiting and often we find a guitarist or a singer and throw then in the deep end with 15 minutes practice ! If we dont have any musicians on the day or maybe just one or 2 we either throw on a backing track or 2 or do some other form of worship, sharing, prayer whatever flows. I believe God always supplies

A tip if you are short a Bass player: I am a keys guy and have several patches where i have a real bass guitar sound on the left side of the keys. Synths are much better than real pianos like that.. You can pull it off for most songs

1 rule I have is: God, it is your gig , and you said you will provide all our needs so whatever you want to to in the service Lord provide and if someone or something is missing then thats ok cause you know what your doing.. We have to be flexible, think outside the box, let the Spirit do what he wants and be more sensitive than alot of big churches with huge teams. Mind you they have the problem of being so organised the Spirit is wondering if he actually gets a look in to do something different.. It pays not to sweat it and go with what he has provided on the day. Strangly some of the best times of worship we had are when we use a backing track (this is very very rare we have used BT's) and a single person singing lead over it. It shouldnt work but then God loves to throw us a curve and say hey I'm in control and am going to make what should not work work so you all know it is me not you..
The church I was in previously uses almost all backing tracks! They have no musicians, but a lot of really gifted vocalists. You're so right: it's God's gig and He often beckons us to leave our comfy boxes... :) BTY, that church has turned into one of the strongest singing churches I know - the congregation has become really adept in picking up new tunes and singing in a variety of styles (gospel, country, rock, folk, pop...). Not to mention accapella with great harmonies... Looking back, I think we can create lazy singers in a church when we always "hand them the notes" in our accompaniments - something backing tracks rarely do.
When we were between guitarists (for about 18 months or so) we relied heavily on MIDIs playing on our synth...it worked pretty well for a while...the only problem was locating new ones that didn't sound like some 9th grader's web page circa 1998...even some of the more expensive MIDI collections had some "clunkers..." But that was what we had to work with, and it was during that time that we got a new member who then invited a couple she knew...and he happened to be a guitarist...
The nice thing about MIDI files is that you can always edit them!
A couple of bass players would be nice!
Our biggest trouble is finding a consistent drummer. That's the one piece that I feel is really missing from our team. I play bass and this is particularly troublesome for me. I have a really hard time locking in with the two guys that we have rotating.
Our band has two keys players and one drummer.  One of the keys players is uncomfortable and is afraid to play lead.  the other keys player has some sort of handicap that I believe makes him forget things that we practice.  I struggle with trying to improve songs, learn new songs, and keep everyone happy. I know we only have one main player and drummer so I feel like I constantly have to protect them from getting their feelings hurt by other team members.  I in fact, just lost the main person who could sing harmony with me and she plays the trumpet because she is upset that the drums are too slow or the piano is missing notes. I told her I needed her to keep her comments positive but she was getting so frustrated at the imperfections that she was verbalizing them in a hurtful and not constructive way. I watch as she resigned yesterday and am sad but I realize that I can't stress over this right now that God will send more singers/players to our church.
I believe that we should pray and believe. God will provide if we do both. Blessings
This is really interesting to read, thanks, everyone, for sharing. I have always struggled with having consistent drummers. Often work schedules interfere, and I've had some great kids that have left for college, etc. It always works out, though, even if we have to go without in certain areas.
