It seems to me every smaller church worship leader I've ever known has had some near crisis level "hole" in their team. For me, it's the bass player I don't have. I was wondering what some others are experiencing. Better yet, has anyone discovered an effective way to solve this problem - beyond the "make due with what you've got and pray" plan?

We have some holes.. We only have a guitar player and piano. This means we have to do slow to mid-tempo songs. Anything too uptempo starts to sounds cheesy :). Honestly prayer is what helps us. A visitor actually told us when we first got up he thought, "Oh this is too bad, the worship isn't gonna be good." By the end he told us the worship was amazing and he felt the presence of God so strong. :)
One of the major holes in my worship team is the lack of musicians.
I am the only musician in my church. I'm a keys guy. so there is really only so much that you can do with that- you know? fast songs used to be a nightmare for me. they would sound like they were dragging and being raked through the mud. I found a solution by using the drum kit on my Roland RD 700 (which has pretty good drum sounds on it) I have a pedal hooked to the keyboard with the settings set to toggle between the verse and chorus drum beats- This has blew open the door for me in so many amazing ways- we can do what ever song i want now...Fast slow...dynamic. I went beyond that "make due and pray" because i hate settling (when there was something more that I could do- you know?) so it took me about 3-4 months to get fluid with the drums, changing them during the song- getting used to the intros and the outros, but now I absolutley love it.

Almost more than a real drummer (although there are some creative limitations that have now become those "holes" in the team but they aren't as gaping as not being able to do fast songs) but i love it almost more than the real thing- because it's always consistent and on point- I just have to be on my A-game.

As the leader, I needed to do something and do something fast so that our church could minister effectively and not have any glaring issues at us- or major turn-offs to people. Our worship team (without being prideful) is one of the best in the county- and we only have one musicians. God's annointing is key. and I'm grateful that He gave me the creative ability to use the drums on my keyboard- Most churches and other worship leaders roll their eyes at me when i say that I'm the only musician because they have 8 musicians- and a full band....but once I lead worship, I've had a worship leader of the biggest church in Silsbee (our city) that that was an amazing job with only one person.
Bassist and 2nd guitarist seem to be the biggest holes right now...I'm looking at taking up the bass, but right now I don't see anyone on the horizon for the guitarist...and our guitar guy is slated for shoulder surgery which will take him out of the mix for several weeks. OK, God, what now?
I would suggest training some new people. Ask around if any of them are interested. Teach kids or young people. They can learn very quickly especially if you let them play weekly. It's also a good way of discipling them. In our church, we have bible study on Saturdays. We would have worship before bible study. I use that as training ground for new musicians before they get to play for Sunday service. Right now, I'm working with a new drummer and new bassist. They're both beginners but they're gradually getting better. The bassist can now play basic contemporary worship songs and he's only been playing for a month. It's great to see them grow and excel. I can't wait to see how good they'll be in 6 months.
Great idea. Now I just need the interested people - and the time... :p

but it def has promise. Good work
that's my biggest thing- finding interested people who have the time and the committment!
Our youth group is currently 4 kids strong...one is our drummer, one is our power-point guy and the other two switch off at the sound board...so I have no problem getting the kids involved...now I need God to send us more kids [grin].
Well right now.I have been playing the oiano for a year so I am doing extremly well for only a year but we have and excellent drummer. We learned together and he is just awesome.. My dad plays the organ and he's the best in the south. Most of the time we just have a organ and drums since I dont play all the songs we sing yet. But Our most need would have to be a bassist we are praying and fasting and God has done told me one was coming so we are waiting.. It would also be nice to have a sax and guitarist but we are not in extreme need for tht..
You can do loads with organ and drums. You've got chords, bass, fills and percussion going on in such a set up, it's a very full sound and coordinating two people is so much easier than coordinating 4... :)
Our biggest hole is percussion. Not a drum kit, that wouldn't go over with our group -- long story -- but a hand drum and some shakers would be sweet. Last week we had 2 guest artists in for special music (guitar & jambe) and they offered to jam with us on the worship set. What a blessing! The only thing was at rehearsal this week the same songs now sound thin with only 1 guitar and 1 bass... Mustn't be envious...

Actually, my guitarist is studying some flamanco (spelling?) players and beginning to experiment with using his guitar body for some drumming sounds, now we need to look at the right mic setup...
Fortunately, djembe doesn't need years of training to sound decent...only a good sense of rhythm. (Even a vocalist like myself can sound not-half-bad with a bit of practice....) I like the idea of using the flamenco percussion on the guitar body. Isn't is awesome that we can worship with so many different styles and techniques!
I'd love to have a rhythm section! Right now, we use a drum machine to provide a back beat to my electric guitar, an acoustic guitar and male and female vocalists. It works, but nothing beats real people.
