Trying to find out is there anyone who actively plays Lap Steel 6, 8 or 10 strings in church. Why and what do you thing it brings to the mix that is maybe different and useful. I am interested in making one ( an eight string) and playing it , but not sure where it would fit into the contemporary music we have at church. My back ground is playing in church keyboard, mandolin, bass guitar and banjo( not in church though), but now I am older, I am looking for a change.

If it's a bad idea then that's ok, but I need to get some direction, though I am determined to still give it a go - with making and learning to play to praise God with, can anyone help please?

If King David can play a harp and the anointing is strong enough to drive the Demons out of Saul then a Lap steel can have the same effect. The lap steel will fit in certain parts . you do not want to over play it . I suggest surround yourself with instruments . lap steel/ guitar/ bass / mandolin ETC... and switch out. I do stuff like that all the time . I have played my lap steel through a multi effects processor with chorus/ delay / reverb and on and off with distortion overdrive / wah wah pedal
volume pedal for string swell effect and so on . so yeah you can make a joyful noise with a lap steel praise the Lord with stringed Instruments amen GOD BLESS
Randy, thanks man that's great. All things can be used ( spareingly/ tastefully) to worship God. My thoughts in what I do and would like to do, is to "flavour" the music and change the dynamics , but I don't like to solo much at all. There are others for that, so I like to fit in with others but be different at the same time, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the encouragement and the info about your setup.
