I was recently asked to play my recorder/flute for services. I wanted to run the mic through my Boss DD-7 digital delay pedal so I bought an XLR to mono 1/4" line and plugged it in. The effect was great but I get a quiet buzz, much like an old tube amp. No buzz when using my electric guitar, so it's not the DD7.
Any thoughts?

The DD7 was my first thought, seems it would have been yours too, if it wasn't working with the guitar.
I would try a direct box with a ground lift, see if that helps.
Sounds like a cool setup (used to run a recorder and a melodica through a PS-2 pitch-shifter delay pedal myself).

Your going from a balanced signal and 'forcing it' into an unbalanced signal, which is not good. Mics and guitar pedals aren't meant to play together. Allow the FOH to add any delay to your signal and take the pedal out of the loop.

I was just thinking, I had a BR600 digital recorder. With it came a small 12" XLR to STEREO 1/4" cable. I still have the cable so I might try that and see if it eliminates the noise. I will also try using a DI box as suggested by Michael Blue, and let this thread know the results.
I think you should try an impedance matcher (1/4" to XLR), that should fix it. Joe The Flow is right, your impedances don't match....this is where all the Hi-Z, Lo-Z discussion begins...
Thanks for the reply Brett. I stopped in at Long & McQuades and it was suggested I try a tube pre-amp. I bought one will try it out Thursday night at practice. WIl let you all know how it goes when I get back.
Well, for those who would like to know, the solution was a mic tube pre-amp by apex. No more humm. yeah!
I would be interested in what other effects you find useful besides delay - I would imagine that a wah or some other filter effects would also be cool for your recorder or flute... : )
while the thought has crossed my mind, I have yet to try it. I've only been doing it about a month or so now. One of our interns told me I was "crazy man" ... he meant it in the good sense. I have had good comments on the use of the effect. I definitely am willing to try other effects, I have an old cry-baby so I'll try that too. But no other effects at this time. Hmm. I wonder what it would sound like through a multi-effects processor like a Line 6 or VAMP? ...

PEDAL THAT CAN BE SET UP TO INCREASE OR DECREASE THE AMOUNT OF EFFECTS
THAT YOU PUSH THROUGH IT I WOULD RECOMEND THAT AND ALSO A INLINE VOULUME PEDAL
TO FOLLOW THE EFFECTS PATH SO THAT YOU CAN KICK THE PEDAL BACK AND TURN IT OFF OR TURN IT DOWN AND ADJUST THE VOLUME SO YOU CAN BE IN THE BACK GROUND OR ONTHE EDGE IN YOUR FACE
I ALWAYS HAVE PROBLEMS WITH SOUND MEN NOT GIVING ME WHAT I WANT SO I ALWAYS SET MY PEDAL AT 3/4 AND LET THE SOUNDMAN DO HIS SOUND CHECK AND WHEN YOU GO ONSTAGE YOU HAVE THAT LITTLE BIT OF PLAY ROOM INCASE YOU NEED MORE VOLUME
