Hmm, that's another good point Randy, thank you. Soooooo much to think about! Still it's great to be able to get some good advice here, so thanks again guys!

The one thing I will mention is depending on how far your sound board is from the mixer determines loss of power.  that is a long way to send power through cables

if you are going to buy speakers you should consider some powered speakers

that way you are not sending power from the board and you are not running extra wires and cables only a signal from  your snake cable .

Hi Dave! Yes, that's a good point and as you say, although the initial outlay may be more the cost of replacing individual gear will be less. Something to think about! :-)

Hey Bob
To throw in my 2 cents... I'm not much on powered mixers. A mixer is an expensive unit, and power amps tend to get destroyed easily, esp in church settings where you end up with someone who is not necessarily a dull blade, but not up to snuff on the technology and makes a single mistake.
Personally, I prefer to keep the amps, monitors, speakers, and board as independent units. It makes the initial purchase more expensive, but the growth and maintenance is much less costly and easier to manage. For example, if you get a board and an amp, and later get a donation of floor monitors for the singers, you add another amp, and *voila* you're off and running.

OK, thanks for your input Jerry; we do appreciate it!

In my opinion you are always gonna have better results with a system that has more than what you may use it for. This allows for "head room" in volume level setting. The unknowns to me are what you'll be sending through the PA and the acoustic of the room. If its a square box ( boomy, gymnasium) it may be enough . If its acoustically treated and depending on the size of the worship band and the style of worship tunes you may encounter certain challenges . there are many variables here that pop up in my mind so let me end this reply with the following - keep it simple as possible , minimize the distractions from the congregation so they may worship Him in spirit and truth.

hi Jerry and thank you for your suggestions. Sure, we'll no doubt buy more powerful speakers. However, do you think the extra 400 watts would make much of a difference as we would prefer to buy the 12 XLR mixer which is more suitable to our needs, but that one is 400 watts less output than the other?
Comment by Jerry Simandl on March 2, 2011 at 5:03pm
Bob, I recommend using speakers that are rated higher the the max output of the amp. ( 2 X 800) means each speaker should be rated at least 800 watts or higher (preferred higher). This will insure that you won't blow a speaker.
