What determines whether or not a song should be considered sacred (holy, worship, praise, etc.) or secular (worldly, carnal, fleshly, etc.)? Is it the type of music that is played, lyrical content, or just how it makes you feel? As more Christian musicians experiment with new sounds, or genres of music not commonly used for spreading the Gospel, should there be criteria for what makes a song acceptable for ministry or are we adopting an "anything goes" type of standard for Christian and Gospel music?
There are boudaries there are set out in the Bible. The boundaries do not include the type of music that accompanies the words of a song for or about Jesus. The psalms include lots of issues that we mostly ignore in our corporate workship.
If we believe in a God who is everywhere how can we divide secular and christian in our musical espressions. All we are involved in is known by God.
I agree. From studying more and spending more time in prayer, I have realized that we (humans) are not the ones who determines whether or not music, lyrics, genre, etc. is holy enough or worthy enough to present before God. God is the Sanctifier, the Consecrator, the One who ultimately will decide if he will accept it. He commands us many times in the Bible to praise, to worship, to sing a new song, etc. Our obedience to these commands and the heart and motives for presenting the sacrifice of praise is not hidden from God. I guess it could become a distraction from us obeying Him, if we are constantly worried if our music (sacrifice of praise) will be sacred enough.
