Leaders With No Formal Training

I would like to try and connect with other worship leaders who have had no formal schooling in "Worship Leading" and see how you handle all the technical aspects of leading a team without a degree behind your name.

Hey Alisa! Welcome to the group. I am located in MN as well, down by Rochester! Small world. I also use "thingee" phrases with the musicians I work with. lol Praise God they have grace with me and don't laugh to hard and try to duplicate the "thingee" I just requested. :-) Sounds like an awesome and interesting ministry you are a part of. Cool!

Way to go Alisa! Way to tdo that "thingee" for the Lord. It's all from the spiritual heart of worship and that's what counts. God bless you.

No formal training over here in Minneapolis either, just a heart for worship and a wack personality. Part of a multicultural church, so we're challenged to do different music in different languages!! It's CRAZY. Just love it, though. Not a musician, so I use phrases like, "Do that thingee that you just did". Pathetic, I know, but we rock the house for Him, y'all!!

Had to build the team from scratch, find musicians, etc. Started with just tracks, me and some background vocals. God has TRULY built His ministry here and I am humbled to be a part of it.

Have done Spanish, Yoruba (Nigerian), Hmong and am open to even more. It reminds us that all nations and tongues lift up praises to our God . . . and not just in a western, American kinda way.

Just participated in a CD project that took the Doxology and a couple of locally written songs and put them into 6 different languages - what an experience for me. Glory!!!!

I'm shocked that churches really ask for a music degree to be the worship leader! That's not a common thing in the circle of churches I've been in. So thank God for that. It should be more about gifting and a call on someones life along with a proven track record of a humble and serving heart. Musical skill comes in after all of that. Sounds like some churches have put too much emphasis on what the world values. This is God's economy and He does things different. That doesn't mean we are to be sloppy and not do our home work. But to see a degree as all encompassing is not God's way of seeing things.

Just joined your great network. Glad to see I'm not alone. Will read your posts and I'm sure will learn a lot from all of you. God bless and keep on praising His Holy Name.

We say y'all too ... it just sounds much shorter than when y'all say it.

Thanks Tricia, it's a challenge for sure, but it also leaves lots of room for the Lord to move (and know that you know it's Him moving!). Blessings to all of you (or y'all as we say in this part of the country...LOL)!

Keep up the good work, Kelly! We are church planters too, started with my husband and five others, with no mother church, etc. God bless you!

LOL...I'm an untrained Worship Leader and the Pastor of the church! We're so small, we don't even have a worship team...?!

This is great! Didn't even knew a group like this existed.
