Leaders With No Formal Training

I would like to try and connect with other worship leaders who have had no formal schooling in "Worship Leading" and see how you handle all the technical aspects of leading a team without a degree behind your name.

In accordance with what Marisa said it's more availability than having just ability.

I couldn't agree more, Marissa and Lorraine. What a refreshing time it is when we focus on worshipping in comparison to 'how to'. Thanks, your comments and sharing are encouraging to me and a lot of others. Worship well!

I believe the time is changing and God is raising up those who have a strong heart for worship and not the spirit of "musicianship". For too long people have made worship about the music when music should only be a vehicle for worshipping. I am part of a something new that God is doing where all worshippers engage not just musicians picking out music and everyone singing what they are told to sing. But engaging with those that sing, dance, pray and speak the word of God. Currently most of those that I know who are leaders do not have formal training either.

Hi Mark, I love worship done this way, in fact I am feeling more and more drawn to this kind of worship. It's good to be reminded of the simplicity of worship in our high techno world. Thank you for sharing. God Bless,

I sat in with a new band this past Sunday morning for worship time. I played my acoustic and stood towards the back edge of the stage and observed. The leader is a plain, straight-forward, "what ya see is what ya get' sort of guy and I loved every minute of it. Nothing fancy, the basics when it came to electronics/sound reinforcement, and a good time of worship. Nice to have a quiet reminder of how it can and should be. Anyone else have this simply and enjoyable 'reminder' experience? I loved it.

This statement came up in my mind that when you want to worship then you're ready. As an example of this, my lastest segment came when I had to complete the musical part of worship and I had no problems stepping up to the task.

Regarding the technical aspect:

I've had a fair amount of experience in the technical aspect (audio, recording, mixing, etc.) for on site and remote events. Staying abreast of what's in use, whats coming, changing, etc. is almost a full time task/job depending upon the size of your church and it's needs. Surround yourself with people who are willing to do this, who have some background, and are willing to learn it as well. We may find ourselves teaching one or two people the basics and letting them go and learn along the way. A good basic mix is just that: basic. Have them join a forum such as this one to exchange ideas, read others thoughts and ask for advice (as we do!). Steel sharpens steel.

Worship well!

I don't have any formal training in worship leading or music but have learned a few chords on the piano & really just watched other musicians and worship leaders and learned that way. At first I felt God leading me with a theme for the songs, like warfare, His Blood, His kingdom or the cross. Then as my relationship with Him increased He started leading me in specific areas of adoration, exultation, declaration, faithfulness, etc. Staying submitted to my Pastors is a great safety net and also not being precious about being guided or corrected is vital. The Holy Spirit has a free reign when I lead and that's the only way I ever want it to be. As far as technical issues go, we talk about what works and what doesn't work and fix it if it needs fixing. We have put a lot of time, effort & prayer into unity & communication so being open and honest with love works for us.

Recently, I experienced being able to let God show me additional songs relevant to a particular theme for worship. I'm preparing songs for a Celebrate Recovery meeting and I had already selected four songs but they were all from England and I didn't want to take chances guessing whether the congregation would know the songs or not. God had led me to very popular songs in my How to Worship Together volumes and just like the songs I'd chosen from Resound Worship, these songs also have meaning for the worship experience with a them and purpose.

I think it's awesome that we can all connect and talk about how God is using those who have no formal training to be worship leaders for His body. One of the most important things that I always try to remember is let the Holy Spirit do the work. All we have to do is go with what He wants and He will make everything fall into place. It seems like God is always giving us something new every week during our service on sunday morning. Praise God!
