Leaders With No Formal Training

I would like to try and connect with other worship leaders who have had no formal schooling in "Worship Leading" and see how you handle all the technical aspects of leading a team without a degree behind your name.

Even with a Christian ministry that is independent of a liturgy, there is a way to pay attention to a calendar. This season now encourages us to prepare for the coming of the Lord as well as to come worship and adore him and to celebrate His coming. The season following the holidays tells us to ask for manifestation of Christ. Resurrection season celebrates Christ's rising from the dead... There are resources to look up for this information (sorry I forgot the link another worship leader sent me) that will help you get started.

A great resource is Union Theological Seminary. They offer an online program that is really great.   Check out this link for more information:

I've been on here for a bit, but just joined this group. I've been a worship leader since 2002, and on the team since 1995. But I've never had any formal training. Looking forward to meeting some other worship leaders as we grow in serving the Lord in this ministry!

Just signed up.. had to .. the title made me chuckle as I just had a conversation about that very thing this morning. For me I learned by watching what NOT to do. So from the beginning my almost constant prayer is "God it's your gig not mine. You Oh Lord are the Master Musician. Let all that is said and done bring Glory to Your Name and draw the hearts of your children closer to you. That was 15 years ago. Though I am not activly leading worship right now when I am called upon my prayer is still the same. Not just a "Hail Mary" before the service starts but time spent in concentrated prayer seeking God's will and God's way not my own. It works and as Rev Matt down below me says it's not how it sounds to us..we are human mistakes are normal.. what makes it perfect before the Lord is that it is from the heart... Jesus used fishermen .. so why does man use the worlds system for who and what gets played.. Selah

Even though worship is not a performance-simply put that it is not designed as a production, we should still play and/or sing and blend everything together the best way possible to the glory of God.

Don't dwell just on how well it sounds, but how well it sounds for God.

Hey all -

I just added another upload for more advanced guitar leaders -- Did You Hear the Mountains Tremble. An old song, but with some interesting chords that will bring new life to it. Have fun!

I represent Mark Beswick - worship leader, and he is doing a worship seminar in London to help worship leaders just like you! The seminar is just two hours but it will cover worship theory and practice. As an experienced worship leader, Mark has been teaching on this subject for over 15 years! He wants to use this opportunity to spend time with a small group of worship leaders - max 20 - so that he can advise you more personally, allow you to ask questions and share ideas and tips and to give your personal prayer for your worship team and your responsibilities!

If you can't make it to London then Mark and his team are prepared to travel to your church to give worship workshops to your whole team and then finish the day with a big worship concert at your church led by your worship team and Mark Beswick!

If you are interested in any of the above or have any ideas as to how we can help you some more - email gemma@howardfrancis.co.uk - looking forward to hearing form you!!!

Had an interesting time this morning. Our church had Daniel Kirkley come as guest worship leader. If you have never heard of him, check him out. He is an incredible singer. It was lots of fun to be in the background playing the acoustic and singing some harmonies. We put a group of guys together last Monday who have not played together to be his band while he played the piano. It was awesome to see God at work.

I have only been a musician for a few years. I am a chaplain and started leading worship while deployed. No formal training, but I have been involved in the worship team (vocals) for a long time. Not music illiterate, but just wanting more.
