Wow! I had no idea this group existed. Very cool. My wife and I have two daughters, 12 & 5, both homechooled.

So I was not sure if I was allowed to join or not. I'm not a homeschooling parent, but I was homeschooled all the way from K-Sr. High, and after college, am now a worship leader! lol

Thank you, Ed, that helps alot. Your right, I need to find something physical for him to do. Thank you, you have really opened my eyes and brought me clarity.

Years ago, Gregg Harris used to talk about a concept I love, which is Delight directed studies. You simply use something the child likes, and center the schooling around it. That can help with some of the boredom. I Really encourage you to find something physical for your son, to do like football etc. Remember they are telling you about a problem, when they are providing those solutions. So its no so much the solution you want to be concerned with, as the problem that is represented by it. It validates their opinion, by recognizing the problem, but provides you as a concerned mom, options by working on the problems, and not their solutions.

Teresa, thank you for your suggestions. Yes, I have thought about both of those options. There is a co-op near us that I hear is really good. I think that I will look into it more. There are free college courses he could take as well. Both are great options. The only problem is that my son wants to go to PS so that he can play football. There may be an option where he could only take a couple of classes and still do the football, but it is uncertain at this time. Also my daughter wants to do cheerleading, again she may be able to take a couple of classes. Honestly I am greatly concerned about the cheerleading though. The short skirts (something we don't allow), the attitude, the reputation. I don't know what it is like at this school at that level. And ultimately, I am very concerned about the spiritual aspect. I have been told that the school that they want to go to is very Christian oriented. They teach abstinance, they have mentor programs, and most of the teachers are Christian. It is actually one of the best schools in the country, but...I know they don't teach about God. They don't teach the Bible. So I think I would have to have an additional class before or after school for Bible time.
Ed, a Godly environment is more important that Academics for me. I want to make the best spiritual choice for their lives. That is one reason I am so concerned in making this decision. For my son, he asked God into his heart when he was younger, but I have not seen it become a personal relationship for him. He respectfully listens and participates in discussions, but it does not seem personal to him. I think mostly he struggles with being a boy stuck at home with his mom and little siblings. He wants more manly responsibilities. He wants more challenges. He is very outdoorsy and it seems like sitting at a computer just bores him to death, even though he does very well academically. Ideally, he needs to be plopped in the wilderness some where to fend for himself. He is a restless soul. I don't know how to give him what he needs.

Ed -- that's great advice. Knowing how committed your kids are to the Lord means your advice is not just mere "lip-service". One of the goals of homeschooling for us is to be able to nurture their relationship with the Lord, so that when they are older, they will be able to continue on in their relationship on their own. Your kids are such an amazing testament to that goal.

Kara -- FYI, where we live there are several homeschool groups that offer High School classes for high school homeschoolers: chemistry, algebra, geometry, etc. We can pay to have teachers teach them those subjects outside of the house (for us, it's a local church that this group rents from) twice a week. So, you might want to look into those options, too. Also, at our local community college, they allow 16 year old homeschoolers to take courses, as well, and the courses count toward both High School credit as well as college credit. Talk about a great way of saving $$ toward college!

I'll be praying for you!

I would consider the inverse of your schooling before you decide. That is, There are somethings that you will have to unlearn them when you put them in PS. So your work will not be done, or over it will simply change. Quite frankly academics can be learned at any age, but the eternal things, are right now, and will have to be taught whether you have them in school or not. Consider which you think is more important, or comes first. WHich has more obstacles etc. (Literally make a decision and say it to someone. "Acedemics are more important than Godly environment" "A Godly environment is more important than Academics" for example) . Though I shocked people when I said this too them, it helped me stay focused. What ever our children hear the most, they will remember, and make part of them and their lives. I have two friends, who I would gladly provide emails for, that did put their high school kids into public school. They will not be doing that with their younger children. That said, not everyone can do it, and not all situations are able to come through in a discussion thread. Seek God, cry out for the sake of your children, and no matter how scared you are, do what he says, he will provide all things. I will be praying for you Kara, this isn't easy, and when you make a decisions because of Love I believe God will bless it no matter what!

There ya go kiddo. As you were saying it does get more difficult when they get older. They seem to outsmart us at every angle. But I still think that one and one, are not three.
