I am a choir director, and it was not that easy for me at first either.  One thing that I had to do was bring in motivation where there was not any.  I had to bring back structure where there was lack and bring into the whole equation live by example, and build a strong confident choir.

The first thing that I did was going in with a plan of action:  Started with a 90 challenge for everyone to show up at every event and rehearsal.  If the choir is not experienced, encourage everyone to just sing melody, and then bring in a person that can teach parts... Create a leadership team within the choir, that is your support team.  I found that worked really well, and they felt they had a voice in the planning and decision making, not a board a leadership group.

Encourage the singers in your choir to really step it up a notch by recruting people that they know to be in the choir that sing.  We are a really large church, and it would be impossible for me to know and see  everyone, really use your resources.

If you are not feeling confident becuase there are people older than you, and you feel that they are more experienced, then invite some of those people to help you do the things that are lacking, HELP not direct, and encourge them to help you in this transistion phase.  Define leadership roles, Admin, Music prep, Vocal Coaches, Musicians for your choir, really define them well and have quarterly meetings with them all so you can all be on the same page.

You must do the leg work to have a successful choir, outside of the worship music.  Then you will find that things will run smoother, and people will be more confident in you too...You are there leader, and they must see you as such, but you have to lead and not be led...you do not have to lead with an iron fist, lead with love understanding and committment and people will come around to see that you really have a goal and a love for what you do...

Hope this helps a little.

Hi to all,

I need some advice in regards to me as a choir leader.

I don't know what it is but i don't feel confident at all but i know what to do, but just cannot do it. I think is because of my age. I am a young leader in the mist of older African people. Help me

Facebook is a great networking tool, and if you work it you can use it in your ministry to keep in touch with friends and reach out to friends of friends with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I just joined Facebook Users, looking forward to talking with you folks. I have been so busy learning Final Cut Studio that I have neglected my Music Studio side for a while, I need to blend the two together now and make things happen. God Bless you all. Looking forward to making some friends.
