Dear Lydia - that is a very good point about not assuming that everyone understands the phrases and words used in older hymns. We worship in Welsh and English where I live, which has its own issues about words - some of the words and grammar forms in Welsh are just not used in everyday speech. And people have lost touch with their 'religious' language. Luckily though, because it is a phonetic language, even non Welsh speakers can have pronounce the words after only a few basic lessons. First language Welsh speakers tell me that they worship with their hearts when singing in Welsh and with their heads in English. They are doubly enriched!

What a great idea for a group!  I am currently involved in a multicultural church in a big city in England where majority members are african or carribean.  I was involved in leading worship at the beginning of this church plant and I had to be extremely flexible in changing the words of songs I had learned and sung all my life, different rhythmms, lack of instrumentation and singing songs in a language I had never learned!  Thank God I have missionary background and speak other languages which helped a lot.

I think being involved with bilingual or tri lingual worship can enhance the believers life.  I have been involved in being led and leading worship in different cultures and find the different language draws my attention to the meaning of the song more.  Recently, I was leading worship on a YWAM DTS in Scandinavia and took the time to ensure the students understood the meaning of the words they were singing in English so that they were singing with their understanding in worship of GOD.  This is an essential little exercise to do with those you are leading or if you have different cultures in your worship group.  Dont assume people can understand all the words in a song especially if they are old English Hymns with words and phrases not used in modern day speech.

wow, roger. Im very impressed. not only did you build on what I said you made it better. lol. but very true. I find myself struggling with Spanish songs that I really wish I had the chords for, but again here in so cal its cool to sing both spanish and english. the latino's love it because we love music and once the father has conquered our hearts with his love thats all we want to do, the other people just like the way spanish sounds, its the language of love especially when it sung to the lover of our souls. Amen. in his grip. Ernie

Thanks Ernie for the words of encouragement and glad to know that we are not the only ones that have experienced this.

Hola Nancy,
the apostle Paul said that there is neither Jew nor Gentile, male nor female, but jesus christ is all and in all. Here in so cal its more open trust me, but I know where your comming from. When I lived in the south for a min it was hard even within the church. The best I can tell you sis is keep doing what your doing, love them with the love of the father, because when it comes down to it. With out the Agape love of Jesus Christ we have no right to even call ourselves christians. in his grip. Ernie
