Some questions for you to help us understand the details:
How large a group are you working with? Are there a range of ages in the group?
Is it a fairly close knit group, or are there some that don't know each other that well? Could there be trust issues?
Have they had recent or frequent changes in leadership? Is there organizing input from adult leadership?
What type of music are we talking about? Some recent stuff is written more for listening than for participating.
What type of response are you looking for?
Permalink Reply by Christian Birchfield on June 8, 2012 at 1:47am There is about ten from the 14 to 17 and they are pretty close knit. There hasn't been a really big change in leadership there is just three different youth pastors who work together. And the music we do is ,mostly just pure worship, such as, revalation song by phillips craig and dean, Jesus Messiah and sing, sing, sing by chris tomlin, how he loves us, i give myself away, etc...
We just wish that they would loosen up and worship in there own way not just standing there and staring at the person singing, and that they would do it to the best of their ability.
Permalink Reply by JORN on June 8, 2012 at 2:03am I see this in my church. Our youth sit together and seldom stand for worship. I've been told that they don't like it when I ask the congregation to stand. Sometimes I feel like there is a hit of rebellion there unfortunately. Don't really have much of a solution but just thought you might like to know you are not alone. You can never go wrong with lifting them up in prayer as well as seeking God's guidance.
Permalink Reply by Christian Birchfield on June 8, 2012 at 2:10am Well it is good to know that im not alone. I really dont have a big place to talk because im not the youth leader i just lead most of the "worship", but i have though about talking to them about how we are not worthy to enter Gods presence and worship him but that he lets us and we should do it to the best of our ability
Permalink Reply by JORN on June 8, 2012 at 2:43am I'm not involved directly with the youth either but also lead most of the worship. I've thought about talking to our youth as well. I have such a deep desire for them to really experience the release that comes with fully giving your heart over in worship. I just want them to experience that joy and not be so bogged down with whether they look cool or not. There is time enough to look cool but worship is one of those times that it should be cool to completely let go.

prayer, yes, JORN
Sounds like a heart to heart with the leadership is required.
Maybe some of them are worried about how good their voice is, possibly they have been told they're rubbish. They need to know that God seeks the heart of them not the worlds view.
Take/Drag them to Soul Survivor (or similar), where they will be in a big gathering and will hopfully find the Holy Spirit break in to their lives.
Task the youth with planning(leading) worship.
Take them out to help in your local community then in the debrief have a time of worship. (dirty tired people have less pride holding them back)
good answers, Vic Salt
Do you have a format in your meeting times? I mean if you're opening with song time, maybe do the devotion/discussion part first and follow with song time. Are you using tracks or do you have instruments that people are playing? Sometimes just acoustic guitar can be good just to get people participating. If you're looking for that eyes closed, hands raised, teary eyed release in worship out of a small group, though, maybe just be happy for now to work towards getting them all to sing together. It's good that all musicians are backsliders, though, since if I were to really let go and worship, it would be hard to play the guitar with my hands in the air!
Permalink Reply by Stevo on June 8, 2012 at 2:05pm All I can say is good luck. It takes time and diligence to encourage teens to "get into it". How they act externally has nothing to do with whether or not they're worshiping or growing spritually. I caution folks against drawing conclusions that indicate that the kids are somehow not being influenced by the Holy Spirit or anything like that. They're shy and self conscious as most young folks are. Just stay with it and be vulnerable and some of them will eventually open up. Some may never until they're adults.
