Worship The Rock - Worship Leader Forum & Social Network

Here is the meaning behind the question...I currently use many older youth songs...I would call them "motion" songs. However, there seems to be this shift of using songs that are more performance oriented in churches today. This shift stirred up in me a few years ago from the worship choruses to more of a rock song. Many times it looks as though people are singing as they would sing along to the radio. Have we as worshipers morphed into a cultural shift "worship" or have we just made Sunday morning worship a performance? So many of our current songs have a feel of being able to perform it rather than just express it...

If I want to sum up what I take your definition of worship to be, it seems to be what I read:

"Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased." (Hebrews 13:15-16, NIV)
Absolutely, and I would also add these:

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship." (Romans 12:1, NIV)

"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13, NIV)

These all have helped to form my definition of what worship is.
Exactly! There also comes a point where it is not so much sacrifice as it is thankfulness. Because He sent His Son to die for us, we now get to share intimacy with Him; the Author and Creator of all things. Forever! I can't wait to see more people worship out of a place of thankfulness and love towards their heavenly Father!
Thanks for ALL of your input...I know that this topic gets discussed quite a bit and I appreicate all of you hearts and comments. We all need to be better at worship and understanding how to not get in the way of our God and his blessings when we worship from who we are and who we are becoming in Christ. Thanks!
This is a topic that will NEVER go away. :)

We've looked at this from a few angles, like old songs that everyone loves, what songs didn't work, and because we'd like to find some new stuff that we CAN use in church, we have a topic on latest, greatest worship songs.

Well, you have lots of people to discuss worship songs with over here! :)
When I do songs for our youth group, I mix the motion songs in with other songs. Motion songs are pretty much old school as most of the modern songs make it hard to do motions to..such as Everlasting God, Mighty to Save, etc. Motion songs are based on the words that allow motions to take place. We do have motions for Shout to the North and Every Move I Make, but most recent worship songs do not lend to motions lyrically.
Something that seems popular with younger people especially is not simply doing motions, but signing (as in for the deaf) to a song. It seems to bring an extra element to the music and the added benefit is that if a hearing impaired person is there, they can enter in. I've seen a hearing impaired member of our church do this where she is in the pews, and it's beautiful.
