I don't like 'Salvation is Here'. I think it's the "It's gonna be alright!!!" bit. It sounds too causal, from a wannabe trying too hard to be hip. That's MY opinion...
And, as I mentioned in Justin's Sing Sing Sing discussion, I don't like parts where the vocals can jump up an octave. It is so congregation-unfriendly. There's that in the bridge.
The most recent time I saw this song it was attempted in a trio set-up, electric guitar, bass and drums... *cringe* I couldn't tell if the problems were because of the song itself or the set-up. As you can see I don't have any happy experiences with this song... :)
I've had two songs that musically just never quite got any air under their wings:
Hallelujah (Your Love is Amazing) ... the team just could not get in sync with that wierd rhythm pattern
and one of my own songs. The last Sunday we scheduled it, I changed the song 40 minutes before service to something else. Drummer issues... and I like my drummer better than I like the song.
Yes, the rhythm is important. When we did Brenton Brown's 'Everlasting God' (Strength will rise) the first time, I think the rhythm was a bit of a mess. When we did it again, another drummer suggested that we removed some of the syncopation in the middle of the verse, and it was much better. I really like the notes coming off the beat, but it might be more important to have something that hangs together well.
I've done it before just fine. It just doesn't work for my team now. AND, to add to the irony, the song is co-wrote by Brian doerksen and Brenton Brown, two of my favorite worship writers.
There are some songs that some drummers just can't do...And a lot of the stuff out there on CD now is programmed and/or has multiple percussionists working...It can't always sound "just like" the CD, lol!
