I've inherited 8 vocalists from the Teen Worship Team at our church.  I want to sit down with them one on one and find out their vocal skills but most importantly, their spiritual position.  I'm looking for suggestions as to the questions i can ask that will give me good insight into their walk with Christ.  At this point i don't want to assume they are saved, and if they are not, I want to be ready to share the Gospel right then.

Thank you to anyone for sharing your experience.  It is greatly appreciated.

Sorry you haven't had any responses so far. I guess you already mentioned the number one question..."So tell me about your walk with Christ?" I personally would want to find out if they are saved are not.....it's one thing for an instrumentalist on a worship team to not be a Christian, it's another for a singer who is up front and prominent in leading if they are not a Christian. The non Christian can not lead worship since by definition of the word they are incapable of worshiping God. Other questions would be:
What do you like most about being on the worship team?
Why do you want to be on the worship team?
What does worship mean to you?
What is most important to you in regards to worship and the worship team?
What do you see your role as in worship leading?

You can also lay out for them what you are looking for, what it means to be part of a team, what expectations you have for people on a worship in regards to their personal life and their personal devotional life, i.e. prayer, bible reading, attending church regularly, mentoring relationships, etc.

That's just a few off the top of my head.....hope it helps.

Chris
Thank you so much!
I like all of Chris' suggestions above (hey, with a name like Chris...:D), although I don't like to distinguish between the importance of spiritual maturity in vocalists versus instrumentalists. I tend towards a philosophy that everyone (incl. sound/lighting/visual/etc. techs) involved with leading worship needs to be a Believer who is pursuing maturity in his/her walk with the Lord. So, I certainly agree that "The non Christian can not lead worship".

But back to your question...

You might also ask each of them about personal worship experiences:
- Talk about the most worshipful experience you've had.
- How do you incorporate worship into your daily/weekly life? when you are by yourself?

Grace and peace!
Chris
When I learn that someone is interested in joining our praise team, I talk with them and give them an Audition Packet. In this packet is a letter explaining what we are looking for in a vocalist/musician. It covers the technical to the spiritual. It also goes over what will happen in the audition and what the requirements are to be a team member (salvation, member, etc). After the technical part of the audition, the team sits down with them and talks with them about their spiritual walk. We use questions like:
What does worship mean to you?
How do you worship in your day to day life?
What are your thoughts on resolving problems within a team?
If they are a fit for the team, they sit down with me and an elder to pray with them and bless their new ministry. Seems to be working so far....
