My sound tech is very offended that I would speak into how the sound is mixed.

Do you think I'm wrong to do this?

I think it is about working together with the tech's and the band to bring about a good mix.

What do you think?

I can completely empathize with you Ms. Anstey. Our sound tech can be very defensive at the slightest suggestion and takes anything you say as a direct criticism of his abilities. For the most part he does a fantastic job, but even when you tell him so he assumes there is a hidden message of some kind. It can be very frustrating at times but then I know I can be as well. I generally phrase things in a manner of seeking his advice or opinion to give him a sense of he's "helping" me resolve an issue or delimma in regards to finding the best overall sound for a particular song or the whole set for that matter. "...wise as a serpent gentle as a dove..." is the 1st scripture that comes to mind LOL but I think I may be pulling it out context a bit. I have found much prayer and then some more, complimented with grace and patience helps me to maintain my focus on the bigger picture, HIM. to answer you question, no I don't think your wrong, in fact, I think we have a responsibility as the worship leader to address any issue that would detract from the congregational worship experience. But. remember the sound guys can be our greatest ally or our worst nightmare.
Naida, you have a say in the quality of sound that comes out of the music because if you feel it isn't good, the congregation you are ministering to will not love it also. Nobody wants to listen to what is irritating to the ears
Speaking as the "Sound Tech", I believe that both music ministry and sound tech should work together.but there are times when the ound tech hears things the worship leader doesn't and vice versa. So i think that a medium should be established now before your sound tech or worship leader say the wrong thing.
I think you are absolutely right. The sound falls under the leadership of the worship leader- they are just a big of a part of the team than your singers and band. You should be able to communicate with them clearly and effectively. Alot of times, however, the sound techs have their own mindset that this is their department- their area and the worship leader has no say in what goes on- That's absolute rubbish. Especially if you're sound tech isn't a musician or musically inclined (like a volunteer- per se)- that is what happened with us- Our sound man is not a musician- never has been. So for him to mix the drums a certain way- will cause them not to sound like drums- and I would have to go back and tell him- I need more bass in the kick- It sounds like a tin can etc. and he would get upset - so finally I just explained to him that his department is under the umbrella of my department and that his attitude is really starting to hinder my ability to lead effectively and efficiently.

That didn't help- he just got more irritated- So I had the Pastor chat with him about it. and ever since then, it's been smooth sailing- you just have to set up who really is in charge.
You guys need to move this over to the other thread - we now have two duplicate threads of this name. This one only has 4 replies, the other many more. I'm just sayin'...
