Most of our discussions seem to assume a Team, a Platform, and a Congregation -- in short, a sanctuary service of some kind.

But what do you do outside the sanctuary?  For my part, I've done a bit of Farmer's Market ministry (you can do anything from "Friend of God" to Mozart's "Alleluia" and people listen), annual community events such as singing carols on the City Hall steps; and quite a bit at senior centers and rest homes.  Usually, I've encouraged a mix of sacred and secular, just for the sheer joy of it (though you have to be careful of the sequence of songs).

In what venues and waht sort of ways do you bring God-music into the outside world?

Our band, when I was the leader, didn't do a whole lot outside the sanctuary, but I remember a couple things -

- our local "Conference" (among we Methodists, we use that word like it's used in the "Western Conference" football teams) was holding a Junior High event and the person in charge of that asked us to come and do the songs from Amy Grant's "Songs from the Loft" CD. If you're part of a denomination that does stuff like that, see if you can get the band invited to events like that

- we did a performance at a Christian coffeehouse in the area. Cool thing about that was that the guy who wrote two or three of the songs we did at the time - John Green, who's a member here at WtR - was able to attend, since it wasn't on a Sunday morning. So we got to meet him and he got to hear what we had done to his songs.
Hi Greg,

I have done worship music outside a castle using non Christian musicians, and also in a club setting, again using non Christian musicians. The musicians loved the music, and if nothing else came from it, they were educated in contemporary Christian music. Questions were asked by the musicians, they were looking on YouTube for other Christian music etc. etc. - no bad thing. I have to say it was a wonderful experience and wish there were more opportunities like that.
I have been with our church praise band since november and we played outside in a city center park for a "relay for life" for cancer survivors as an opening band in June and in July we played out for a Gospel night in the local downtown park in our city. both went well with the audience, but playing outside of our studio quality church sound system made most of the band rethink what we are doing, it helped me rededicate to playing better and putting more time in to get a better "finnish" on the end product.
