Okay someone's got to ask - mosque near ground zero and tolerance.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=exodus%2020&version...

2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

3 "You shall have no other gods before [a] me.

4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

I'm pretty sure most of you are offended or disagree with this being allowed. I for one am against it as much as erecting a kamakazi pilot memorial at pearl harbor or a confederate soldier memorial over harriet tubman's grave.

We as the public don't seem to have much say over this matter. But I wanted to get others thoughts on the word tolerance versus favoritism on behalf of those allowing this.

ps its my understanding the same organization was offered land a little further away at a discounted price. Is this yet another turn in our country?

JORN, What you are saying is true and maybe it should be relocated.Perhaps they own that space and that's part of their motivation, I don't know. What's important through all this is that people learn to the difference between radical terrorists and your everyday Muslim and stop lumping them all together!

When folks in Colorado start protesting the building of a Mosque in their neighborhood the true nature of our problem surfaces: We are haters motivated by fear!
The difference between a radical terrorist and your everyday Muslim isn't as great as you would think. I used to work with a dozen or so "everyday Muslims" from various Arab countries. This was a research environment and these guys were highly educated - technology fellows. Get them in a car on the way to lunch and they start talking about what they'd like to do to Jews and how the US and Jews were behind 911. I'm not making this up. What I really think is that your average Muslim isn't so peaceful, he just doesn't act out with terrorism.

I know one reason people object to mosques and Islamic community centers - after they build into an area, they start to protest the local laws and ordinances that are contrary to sharia - "you can't tell us to bury our dead 6 feet deep, that's against the Q'ran", "women can't file for divorce, change that law" and the list goes on. I'm not making this up, we're dealing with it in a neighboring county and it's a big mess. They don't want tolerance, they want everyone to live by their laws. I know this isn't everywhere, but I've seen enough of it to be wary of the supposed "peace".

In contrast, we just had a very large Hindu temple go up near my church and not a speck of trouble happened. First rate.
I know some American conspiracy theory folks also believe that the US and Jews were behind 911 to give them a justification for going into the Middle East. For Muslims to believe that just shows how skeptical they are of us! Perhaps there's nothing we can do to change their Great Satan view of us!
This Islamic center is not a mosque...it's a community center, and it's 5 blocks from Ground Zero. Even though I think it's in bad taste still to have this erected so close, legally, we all have religious freedom in this country we love called America. And if we enjoy that freedom for ourselves, we also must allow it for others of different faiths...and it is the way our gov't is set up. That is what makes us so blessed & special here in the USA. To prevent it (which cannot be done legally) is to deny others their right of religious freedom. This is what our President explained recently. He wasn't saying he agreed with their decision to build in lower Manhattan (to me, his body language suggested the he was doubting the wisdom of their decision), but he was supporting ALL OF OUR RIGHT to have religious freedom and tolerance in the USA.
Very well said Frank, thanks!
Thanks Bosque.
Frank, I realize this is just a clip and may possibly be taken out of context (if anyone can locate the entire speach I would love to view it in context) but this is still a bit mocking in its delivery. So although we can project our desires to support the rights and freedoms of all, I do have to scratch my head a bit.

And yes it is in bad taste which makes one question the people behind it.
This is probably in my opinion one of his better speeches. As a Christian I am not offended by it. As a libertarian, I agreed with pretty much every word of it. What concerns me more, (and this goes way beyond the ground zero controversy) is it's unequal application.
As I noted, I would like to hear/read the whole speach so I have a better feel for it in context. Can you elaborate a little on what you mean by "unequal application"?
As in favoring one religion because of current p.c. (political correctness) trends. Right now I'd say our nation as a whole tends to favor Islam because there's a massive p.c. campaign since 9/11 not to pain Muslims as terorrists. Often times Muslims get prefered treatment by the ACLU, public policy, how stories are presented in the media, etc...
I thought this was another great article on the topic.

The Pentagon opened an interfaith chapel in November 2002 close to the area where hijacked American Airlines flight 77 slammed into the building, killing 184 people.

Muslims gather there for a daily prayer service Monday through Thursday and hold a weekly worship service on Fridays, drawing no complaints. Similar but separate services are provided for other faiths.

FACT CHECK: Islam already part of WTC neighborhood
