Wow!  There are so many things to think about hidden in the midst of this discussion.

David, I went through a situation with a couple that was similar to yours.  It was very painful but I believe that we can learn from our experiences.  I encourage you to dig deep and look at this as objectively as you can.  Look at it as an opportunity to learn and grow.  

 

I do sense as others have mentioned that the struggle, although on the surface may appear to be about music, is not totally about music.  There are deeper issues but let me start with the music.  The discussion addressed the ideas that we are to worship God.  So as a worship leader and pastor you have the role of inviting the congregation into worship.  The goal is to bring them into the presence of God.  The ways to do that are countless so it ultimately has nothing to do with a particular type of music.  For that matter, it doesn’t have to involve music at all.  Remain open to music and ideas you may not have considered before.  Also remain open to where this might comes from (ie. Don’t shoot the messenger).

 

As for the idea of being “spirit filled”…  that is tough territory.  You can’t really say what’s in another’s heart.  Only God can do that.  God poured out his Spirit to different people all through the bible and that manifested differently based on the person and situation.  You might want to go back and look at the commonalities not among the manifestations of the Spirit but among the hearts of the people God poured His Spirit into. 

 

Look at the anatomy of the struggle with this couple as well.  Try to put yourself in the place of the couple and look at it from the other side.  This will allow you to gain some insight into your role in the conflict.  It may not help you resolve the current issue but it may will give you tools for the future should a similar situation occur.    I went through a very difficult time with a very powerful couple in my church who eventually left the church taking a few members with them.  Much of what happened really had little to do with me in the grand scheme but it was important for me to examine my role.  When I really looked at it objectively I learned things about myself that were really valuable.  It helped me see my areas of strength and places that I needed to improve.  So although you are placed in a position of authority, you can always improve.  I encourage you to use this experience to ask the hard questions, look at your role in the conflict and maintain an open mind.  I can assure you it will not be comfortable but it will bring you closer to the throne of God and wiser about our sheer humanity.

No need to apoligize for the post length, good stuff there. There are other things involved that i talked over with my Presbytor, they attended his church for a couple years, same trend over time. I won't get into all the details but am glad others like yourself can see there is more to it. I knew most of these things before I posted, just wanted to get some specifics about the music because it was one of the things brought up and i never had to deal with that part before. Unfortunatly they were going to leave even if i played everything they wanted. As I said I think they came twice in the 3 years here for the whole worship service, after talking to others I believe some of the thought about the music came from someone else who left over two years ago that they are friends with. Again I can't get into the whole thing but you are correct, anytime someone leaves or threatens to leave and gives many reasons we have to check ourselves, which I have and have prayed with others, I always want to make sure I'm on the right path so I can lead others on the right path.

Hymns are beautiful and a very big part of church history. I always revamp them and worship with them at home so that they become part of my heart. I throw one in at least every other week. As worship leaders are job is not to play cool songs. Our job is take the congregation from where they are at the lead them on a journey into the presence of the Lord. We also are required to have compassion for our congregation. We can gain a greater compassion by knowing and honoring their culture (where they are and how they most experience the Lord.) Worship leaders are teachers, pastors, and hosts for the presence of Jesus). I guarantee that if you worship at home with a hymn and then throw it in your set, your congregation will flow into the presence with you. Try, "It Is Well" , "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" just to name a couple... Hope that helps.

Amen, yes I do that, just havn't learned alot of hymns yet but like I said I try to get them in at least once or twice a month. We Just did Nothing but the Blood with a few extra verses I found on the Internet and it was awsome, there are many Hymns like that I know, it's just making the time to learn them with everything else I do here.

Hymns have been sung so many different ways over history, they come without a particular expectation of style:  thus you have a certain freedom in how to sing them.  They are also primarily a singing art form rather than instrumental -- perhaps you can take advantage of that aspect to lead the people to a new level of congregational unity through song.

I'm new here, but thought I'd jump in. I have never had requests for certain styles of songs! I think people are happy with what we are doing. We do mostly contemporary. I'll throw in different styles of Amazing Grace every so often, but basically we don't do Hymns. We're none denominational and flow more in the current music that's out there.
